Valorant in the test: Little innovation, lots of fun

What is ?

Valorant is free-to-play and quickly explained. It is a tactical “5vs5” -person shooter with hero abilities. An attacking team must detonate the spike (bomb) on one of the available bomb sites or eliminate all members of the defenders to win a round. The defenders, in turn, must prevent the attackers from doing so by striking down the opposing heroes, or defusing the placed spike.

Each player has only one life per round, and the team that wins 13 rounds first wins the match. A match usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. In addition to your weapons, you also have specific hero abilities of the individual agents at your disposal to decide the match in your favor.

Valorant Test Conclusion

Counter Strike: Global Offensive is merged with Overwatch in Valorant to create a mix that combines already familiar game elements into a familiar, but not overly familiar experience. Even though the comparison might not seem entirely fair to everyone, Valorant is the direct competition, and the influences of CS:GO and Overwatch cannot be denied.

Players with excellent aim and a good understanding of the game will be rewarded by Valorant. The hunt for the next victory is as much fun as the rocky road to maturing into a better player.

Games is on its way to something special with Valorant, but at the same time hasn’t quite reached its goal yet.

These are the strengths of Valorant:

  • on mouse and keyboard as well as game understanding are rewarded.
  • Successful fusion of proven game elements into a familiar as well as fresh FPS experience.
  • Gameplay is tight, compact and responsive.
  • Steep learning curve motivates if you’re a competitive player looking for a challenge.

These are the weaknesses of Valorant:

  • Steep learning curve demotivates, if you are looking for quick fun in between, the challenge might be too high.
  • Little innovation.
  • Graphics and animations are bland.
  • Weapons lack punch in sound design and visual feedback.

Good copy is better than bad invention

There’s no denying the inspiration of CS:GO. A turn-based, competitive “5vs5” first-person shooter where the attacking agents have to plant a bomb and the defenders have to stop them. Actually, this description is enough to make you think of the legendary shooter. But it doesn’t stop there.

Before each round there is a buying phase, in which players can stock up on equipment and weapons. The better you play and the more rounds you win, the higher your credits will be to get the items you want for the next round.

Handling your team’s economy is one of the requirements many shooters shy away from these days, but Valorant makes it easy for any player. If you’ve made a bad buy at the start of the round, unlike in CS:GO, you can sell your equipment back within the buy phase and recoup the money spent. A small but clever change that also makes it easier for newcomers.

Gameplay and mechanics are also reminiscent of “the good old days”. Map knowledge, calling out the opponent’s position (callouts), teamwork and pre-aiming are just as important as your pure aiming ability. Anyone who has played Counter-Strike for any length of time in their life, regardless of version, will feel right at home.

Before each round, you equip yourself in the purchase system.

All weapons have a predictive recoil system. Each of them has its own recoil pattern (dispersion pattern). This means that the weapons always have the same Recoil pattern and the same Have ball scattering range. Also, your weapons are more accurate when you stand still. So “spray and pray” is useless. The TTK (time to kill) is low and every single bullet can mean the end.

The demands Valorant places on the player result in a steep learning curve. Mastering this and improving every day is one of the biggest incentives of the game and for any player with a competitive mentality. Beginners, however, might be a bit scared off by this.

The Overwatch influences can be seen in the agents. Each hero has different abilities that are tailored to a specific play style. By the way, you have to buy them at the beginning of the round as well, and they don’t have a cooldown. This eliminates the spamming of abilities.

Abilities should and must be used tactically wisely to increase the chances of victory. Each character also has an Ultimate Ability. You recharge them through kills or by collecting orbs that are scattered around the map.

However, the abilities of the agents do not overshadow your skills at the weapon. Instead, they give you more room for experimentation and different tactics.

Copied from the wrong neighbor

All that glitters is not gold in Valorant either and hasn’t always spiked at the right seatmate. With only four maps at the start of the game, there is too little variety and it is to be hoped that the map pool will soon increase.

The graphics and animation of the characters often seem bland, dull and sometimes a bit uncharitable. This also applies to the game’s agents. The heroes don’t even begin to have the charm of the characters from Overwatch. One or two actors stand out, but that can’t turn the tide either.

Those who want to an emotional connection to the agents will be let down here. You can also see the lack of innovation in the abilities. Some abilities are copied almost one-to-one from Overwatch.

Unfortunately, the visual as well as auditory feedback of the weapons also comes up short. There is simply no tangible impact in this category.

Little style, but the core appeals

In this day and age, you can expect the game to change over time. The gameplay mechanics are robust and feature a strong core. How the meta, maps, and other things will still change remains to be seen.

All in all, Valorant is a lot of fun and Riot Games has laid all the groundwork to form something special. The core of the game is probably familiar to a great many players, but the abilities of the agents don’t make it come across as too familiar.

Due to the Twitch hype and the large rush of players, there were fears that the servers would be overloaded and that there would be technical problems. Fortunately, I haven’t had any such problems during my time playing. Matches are found quickly and overall the game only hung up once.

Last but not least, it remains to mention that the business model with Battle Pass and microtransactions also finds its place in Valorant. Fortunately, these are only purely cosmetic items. So you won’t find any pay-to-win
