The League of Legends World Championship is just around the corner. To qualify for the group stage, teams must win the LEC split. G2 has already clinched the title in the spring and qualified early for the finals in the summer – Season after beating Rogue 3-0. But Rogue returned the favor with a drubbing of G2 in the Summer Split final.
What you should know beforehand:
- The pro team Rogue had managed to beat Fnatic 3-1 through the loser’s bracket in the semifinals and entered the finals of the Summer Split for the third time.
- However, they have a reputation for not being able to win the LEC and so it was previously suspected that they would go to Worlds without a title for another time, only qualifying via the play-ins.
- Having already beaten Rogue 3-0 beforehand, G2 was considered the clear favorite in the match. But things didn’t go according to plan for G2 in this final.
Rogue destroys G2 Esports
Why was the game a blowout for G2? After a clear win in the semifinals against Rogue, top team G2 Esports from the LEC took a beating in the final. With a 3-0 win, Rogue gets their first trophy. Here we tell you how it happened:
The first game between G2 and Rogue took a little time to get going at first. However, Rogue managed to take over the game within a few minutes. Two kills, one in the middle and one on the botlane, lead to decisive advantages. Shortly after, there was a massive teamfight on the second Dragon, which Rogue managed to win.
This advantage allowed Rogue to continue in the game and pushed G2 back into their base. This was probably not enough for Rogue’s ADC Markos “Comp” Stamkopoulos. He managed a quadruple kill and then, with the help of his team, even a quintuple kill against G2.
In the second game it was not clear for a long time who had the game in hand. Both teams didn’t give each other anything until Rogue was able to trap the G2 players on the fourth dragon and managed to kill 4 of the opponents without losing a player himself.
This provided the team with the Baron buff and ensured that G2’s base could be torn down. G2 briefly managed to turn the game back their way, but Kim “Malrang” Geun-seong defended the base and prevented the game from ending prematurely.
A mistake by Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski, which Rogue took advantage of, led to another Baron buff, giving Rogue the win. G2 was overrun by the ensuing offense.
In the third game, Rogue’s individual superiority on each lane gave it a farm and gold advantage of nearly 4,000. Rogue shone with a safe play style and cruised straight to victory.
With the gold advantage, they were able to ambush G2 at Baron and get the Baron buff as a result. A push allowed Rogue to close out the game a few minutes later and hold on to beat G2 3-0.
Why is the victory so significant? The first trophy for Rogue: For Emil “Larssen” Larsson this was a home game in Malmö. He was able to show his skills on the midlane with the “LeBlanc” pick. This was his first trophy win in the professional league.
It was not only the first trophy for “Larssen”. Andrei “Odoamne” Pascu also held the LEC trophy in his hands for the first time. After seven years of career and 3 finals in the LEC, he didn’t want to continue his career with the stamp of a “loser”, but break the meme of 0-3 Rogue defeats and win the title.
Moved to tears, he holds an interview at the conclusion of the third game and talks about how unique it feels to destroy those 3-0 by whom they were destroyed 0-3 themselves just a week earlier, and even in the finals of the LEC Summer Split (via youtube.com).
What does this mean for the 2022 Worlds? Rogue gained entry to Worlds 2022 by defeating G2 eSports 3-0. As trophy holders of the Summersplit, Rogue qualified directly for the group stage of Worlds.
