Who is it about? Asmongold has been on Twitch since 2014 and is probably the biggest streamer on World of Warcraft and MMORPGs in general, with over 3 million followers. In addition, he also shows other games.

Even Asmongold’s room, where he streams, became a star over time – sort of. Recently, however, the focus was back on WoW: Asmongold created a new character in Wrath of the Lich King. But during the final step of the extensive customization, the stream was about to come to a brief halt.

Because Asmongold’s preferred names were all already gone.

“Somebody’s really putting in the work”

In the stream, Asmongold can be seen wanting to use that exact name for his character at the launch of Wrath of the Lich King – only to be shown that “Asmongold” is already taken. “Wow, what a surprise,” he comments cynically.

“Asmon” and “Zackrawrr” don’t go through either, nor does “Asmongler.” “Somebody’s really going all out,” says Asmongold.

In the end, the character gets the name “Asmonfresh” – but the streamer is obviously not that happy with it, but he says he doesn’t want to sit around thinking about it for three hours now.

Here’s what Asmongold has to say about it: From Asmongold’s point of view, Blizzard should make sure that not all kinds of people can use the name. “Seriously, I wish they would let me reserve a name,” the streamer said, “Because people imitate me and cheat other people by pretending to be me.”

In his view, Blizzard should put a stop to this – if in doubt, even in such a way that no one can be called Asmongold anymore: “I wish Blizzard would just make sure that you can’t take that name. That’s just bullsh*t,” says the streamer: “I’d even rather not get it than someone else using it and cheating people with it.”

That’s the problem with the names: In online games and especially MMORPGs, the naming of characters is an important aspect, because especially in games with large numbers of players, the preferred name is quickly gone. Then you are called “Asmonfresh” instead of “Asmongold” – or in case of doubt “XAsmonfresh2345”.

However, many players use the same name in different games for years – so you don’t like to change your name. With streamers, of course, there is the additional component that players quickly think about securing the name.

Reserving a name is usually not possible in MMOs. New World 2021, for example, was an exception – but there were also problems.
