Gamers have the craziest ideas when it comes to alternative controllers in video games. Instead of mouse and keyboard or the gamepad the dance mat is used, the Overwatch hero with the Nerf Bow played or trained the pet to play video games. Twitch streamer Super Louis 64 also knows his way around unusual controllers.

He has already gambled with a Ring Fit, a pizza and several bananas as controllers. His latest project isn’t quite as crazy, but provides the best immersion in Final Fantasy XIV. Using a controller consisting of a book and a pen, he ventured into the dungeons of Final Fantasy 14 as a healer (scholar) and supplied his fellow players by casting his spells via a pen (wand) and drawings in a book volume. With the matching cosplay, the scholar immersion becomes perfect.

In a short clip on Twitter, the Twitch streamer shows how the combo of book and pen controller works. The controller consists of two main parts: The book, which is created by cosplayer/creator Erin from @icequeenog designed after the Hard Leather Grimoire, contains input buttons and sensors that correspond to actions in the game. The buttons on the left side of the book correspond to various sidebars, while two sensors on the right side cast the spells that the player queues up.

Essentially, it works like this: Super Louis 64 can use the book controller’s buttons to queue up abilities. He then draws on the appropriate sensors with the massive stylus to cast spells in the game. Overall, Super Louis 64 combines the physical actions of drawing spell signals with the typical pressing of buttons to play the game!
