Twitch star banned for hateful behavior: Here’s what’s behind it

After more than eleven successful years, one of the most famous Twitch streamers has now been permanently banned. Steven Bonnell II, who entertained his 700,000 followers with discussions and opinions on politically explosive topics – which have now apparently doomed his Twitch career.

Who is Destiny anyway?

The American has been streaming regularly on Twitch and its predecessor platform Justin.tv for 11 years. He started his career as a Starcraft 2 player, but from 2016 he made a name for himself as the first major political streamer. His content included political debates with other streamers or internet personalities.

Over the years, he referred to himself as. very great social democrat, Hardcore Capitalist, classical liberal, Rule utilitarian and agnostic atheist. He also emphasized that he preferred on the basis of empirical data than with moral conviction. argued.

Through his pugnacious and belligerent style of discussion he was often referred to in various media as effective opposition to right-wing politics-YouTuber appreciated.

Nevertheless, there has already been some controversy surrounding Destiny. For example, in 2020 he said about the turmoil caused by the death of George Floyd:

The riots must finally stop. And if that means white redneck militias out there mowing down the bullshit protesters who think they can torch buildings at ten o’clock at night, then at that point they have my fucking blessing….

Destiny justified this statement on the grounds that his frustration was only with the rioters. From these, he believed that they could again entice people to vote again for Donald Trump in the American presidential election.

Destiny banned from Twitch – what’s behind it?

There is no official reason for his now permanent ban from the streaming platform so far. Twitch only expresses itself cryptically in such cases, similar to the case of DrDisrespect. As official reason will be here hateful behavior called.

DrDisrespect surprisingly and apparently permanently banned

According to the Twitch user terms, hateful behavior is defined as follows:

Hateful conduct is any content or activity that promotes or encourages discrimination, denigration, harassment, or violence based on the following protected characteristics: Race, ethnicity, color, caste, national origin, immigration status, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, serious medical condition, and veteran status.

Currently, two possible reasons are circulating:

No. 1: Opinion about trans athletes and sportswomen.

Destiny herself suspects that a statement about transsexual swimmer Lia Thomas might be the reason. Her in a competition, where she even left Emma Weyant (silver medal at the 2020 Olympics) behind, currently divides the US. Destinys argues that Trans women and cis women should not compete in the same competitions.

– No. 2: Discussion with a right-wing nationalist

In the course of his political debates, Destiny converses with people of all political persuasions. In early March, he had a discussion with far-right streamer Nicholas Fuentes, who was banned from Twitch, Twitter, YouTube, and most other social media platforms for racist, misogynistic, and anti-LBTQIA content.

The fact that he provided a platform for this on his Twitch channel could be a possible reason for the ban – after all, even chess grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura was recently banned for three days for watching a stream in which the persona non grata DrDisrespect was playing chess.

There will most likely never be a detailed justification from Twitch. Destiny will henceforth post its content on YouTube, where it streamed for six hours yesterday.
