Trymacs cheats its way up

Immortal ermogelt – Trymacs has been playing Valorant for three months. But already he is playing in the second highest league. With the right friends, anything goes.

Hamburg – Trymacs entertains his fans again and again with crazy ideas and formats. No matter if he burns tons of money in FIFA or records a VLOG for a moped tour, his videos are well received. Now the Twitch streamer produced a format called Road to Immortal. He wanted to cheat his way into the game’s highest league as an iron player in Valorant. He also earned criticism for this.

Tryamcs cheats his way to the top in Valorant – Road to Immortal shows boosting

That’s how the streamer ticks: About three months ago, on April 24, 2022, the video series “Road to Immortal” starts on Trymacs’ YouTube channel. In this one, Trymacs wanted to get promoted – that is, boosted – to the highest league of the Valorant Rankings by some high-profile players. To put this in perspective, only about 0.5% of all players currently make it to the Immortal rank.

He himself is an iron player, so he plays in the worst league Valorant has to offer. There are currently about 89% of all players in rated mode. However, this format has been criticized in the Valorant community. By the way, the streamer also only wants to play soccer with the best. Trymacs had to buy his friends for his team.

What is boosting? Boosting is usually the process in which a player passes the account on to a better player so that this player can earn a higher rank. An account is thus “artificially” promoted to a rank to which it does not belong.

Trymacs conveys boosting as entertainment – criticism gets loud

Why is this problematic? In the format, Trymacs shows how he gets “boosted” by very good players. Normally, the ranking system in games like Valorant is supposed to ensure that only players with the same skill can play against each other. However, boosting messes up the system. Trymacs now has a rank that he is not entitled to. For the games shown, this is not problematic at first, because all team members are involved and know what they are getting into.

Later, however, it becomes a problem for other players* who unknowingly play along with it. This is because the high skill gap means that his team has to play a quasi 4v5. For these reasons, boosting is forbidden according to ’ terms of use: “Playing on another person’s account or other activities that have boosting as a goal” can result in penalties. The following Twitter thread summarizes the issue quite well:

The Twitch star didn’t really “cheat”, after all. However, boosting is basically a form of distortion of competition, because a fair competition is no longer possible as a result. Through the format of trymacs in Valorant, boosting is marketed as entertainment. The impact on other players’ enjoyment of the game, who subsequently have to play with Trymacs on Immortal, is sold as “it’s just fun,” the accusation goes. Conversely, the iron players who were mowed down by professionals probably didn’t have much fun either.

How does Trymacs deal with the criticism? The streamer takes it in stride and isn’t above provoking after the successful conclusion. In the finale of Road to Immortal, he asks at the end: “Chief Trobel, you have to tell me now what I have to do for a tweet that I make people angry“.

Whether Trymacs will continue to play on the account is unclear. As is the question of whether Riot Games will step in and possibly suspend the account for Valorant. However, with an average of about 200,000 clicks per episode, the format should have been a success for the streamer either way.
