For a short time, many fans were able to grab Overwatch for free. However, that didn’t go as planned, so the promotion was shortened by 3 months.
It is currently quite quiet around Overwatch. No wonder, after all, many players are already thinking about Overwatch 2 and a large part of the development seems to have been shifted there. New information about this will probably only be available at BlizzConline in February. Only the Overwatch League is still in full swing and continues to try to retain viewers and satisfy fans. However, a PR campaign has now failed properly and had to be ended after only one hour.
What was it about? Overwatch team Boston Uprising wanted to do something good for their fans and bring more players to Blizzard’s hero shooter. Therefore, they launched a promotion where interested people could simply fill out an online form and then receive a free copy of Overwatch after a few days. There was apparently no catch to the whole thing – you signed up and there was Overwatch.
The action was short-lived – long faces now abound.
What happened then? The requests for this free offer literally exploded. In no time at all, word got out that you could grab a version of Overwatch for free from the Boston Uprising team. Whether this was for fans or not was not important. Even fans of other teams or people who don’t follow the Overwatch League at all could get their hands on it.
This led to so many requests that after only an hour, the page was closed. Actually, the offer should have run until January 15, 2021.
However, those who registered there in time will still receive their Overwatch copy in the coming days.
Was the offer also valid for us? No. In order to get the free version of Overwatch in the short time, you had to be a resident of the US. So “us Europeans” didn’t really miss out. But if you are still interested in Overwatch, you should keep an eye on the various teams in the league. There might also be a promotion where European players can get a copy of Overwatch.
Are there more actions like this coming? It’s a virtual certainty. Overwatch League Vice President Jon Spector has already confirmed via Twitter that they are working with the various teams to bring Overwatch and League Tokens to fans via various promotions.
So keep your eyes peeled if you’re interested in a free version of Overwatch.
