Overwatch 2 is back in beta and Blizzard has released a new skin to attract people to Twitch. However, the action is causing a lot of negative feedback from the community – because it already rewards successful streamers and neglects small content creators.
Since June 28, 2022, the second beta of Overwatch 2, the quasi-sequel to Blizzard’s online shooter, has been running. While the first beta phase was a short but massive hit on Twitch, the current trial version of the game should probably also attract some viewers on Twitch. That’s because Blizzard has released an exclusive skin that you can only get if you give away a total of three subscriptions to streamers. That doesn’t sound too bad at first, but the “Support a Streamer” campaign has drawn a lot of criticism: It rewards streamers who already have a lot of success on Twitch.
Overwatch players are pissed – why give gifts to successful streamers?
Because the three subscriptions (equivalent to 15 euros) must not go to any Overwatch 2 streamers if you want an exclusive Medic skin for the hybrid character Brigitte. Instead, Blizzard has published a list that also includes prominent streamers, some of whom have nothing at all to do with Overwatch and hardly need a push financially – Twitch stars like Asmongold, xQc, Fextralife or DisguisedToast. They have millions of followers and hardly need any more attention, according to critics.
Here’s how Blizzard responds to community criticism
Community manager AndyB has dealt with the criticism in the forum. He emphasizes that one should not overestimate how much the listed streamers earn (whereby he does not mean mega-earners like xQc). We’ve already highlighted this fact in a special – the percentage of rich streamers is generally tiny.
In addition, the community manager points out that the list also includes smaller, long-standing Overwatch streamers. Anyone who wants to support them can do so, of course. It is also a kind of test run with this “first event”. That’s why a limited number of streamers were selected. In the future, you can build on this and “with a high probability of expanding availability”.
