It looks like FIFA 23 will be the last soccer title of EA which carries the name FIFA. During the renegotiation of the license agreement there were major disagreements in which both parties have not yet come to an agreement.
The fight for the license
The video game series under the FIFA name began back in the 1990s with the title FIFA International Soccer. FIFA 95 followed shortly after and since then the game has been re-released every year. Time and again, the game has been a hit and the series has remained amazingly successful, despite relatively minor changes to the game system. This year the newest title of the series is supposed to follow, FIFA 23, but after FIFA 23 it’s over for the time being.
The license agreement between Electronic Arts and FIFA expires this year. For the future of the contract EA demanded more freedom, which concerns the organization of the video game. For example, the studio wants to bring new game modes and other new aspects to the game. FIFA did not react very positively to this demand. Instead, it increased the price of the license immensely, which now leads to problems for EA, which does not want to pay the new price. Because even the 30-year cooperation of the studio with FIFA could not change the fact that they now demand 2.5 billion US dollars for the license of the well-known name. For EA, this is clearly too much. Now the CEO of Electronic Arts, Andrew Wilson, commented on the conflict.
“FIFA” hurts EA’s video game.
According to Andrew Wilson, Electronic Arts has not benefited from the licensing agreement with FIFA for a long time. Among other things, he said that the contract does not bring the game more than four letters on the cover. According to him, this is a benefit that is almost completely irrelevant nowadays. Nobody looks at the cover anymore and games are rather bought directly online. For him, one thing is now certain: the license for FIFA does nothing good for the game. Instead, it only prevents EA from enjoying more freedom and making the game more interesting and better.
After FIFA 23, the game could soon be known by a completely different name.
Fans also don’t need to worry about their favorite players and clubs. The name license with FIFA has nothing to do with individual clubs and players. In fact, such contracts were concluded directly with the individuals concerned. EA has already applied for the patent on a new name for the game series, should they not be able to agree on a license agreement. The new name on the patent is “EA Sports FC”, but it is not yet known whether this name is really final. One thing is for sure though and that is that EA seems to be preparing to end the cooperation with FIFA completely.
It is now up to EA to find a solution which is acceptable for EA itself as well as for FIFA and the fans of the game. However, if there is no agreement, fans should already prepare for the fact that their beloved game might be released under a new name from next year on. However, if Wilson is right and the game undergoes fundamental improvements without the restrictive license and gets new content, then fans can rejoice. Because they will probably get a better, more modern game in the future. Whether the name is FIFA or not may be a secondary consideration for many.
