This is how often player are racially insulted

A study by football’s world governing body has examined in football. Unbelievable figures came to light – a tool from should help.

The most important in a nutshell

    • Football’s world governing body Fifa has published a study on messages in football.
    • Over 400,000 insults in connection with two matches were evaluated.
    • The majority of these were identified as racist or homophobic.

Unfortunately, is still a big issue in football. Internationally, incidents of being racially insulted in the stadium happen again and again. On the Internet, the number of insults based on skin color against football players is many times higher.

Fifa hate comments on

On social networks, many hide behind anonymity and regularly insult players. World football’s governing body Fifa has now conducted a study on this phenomenon. And the results are shocking: 406,987 insulting posts were examined around the finals of Euro 2020 and the Africa Cup alone.

Have you also noticed the many hate comments against footballers?

It found that more than half (55 percent) of players were verbally attacked on social media. The Fifa evaluation also shows that a full 38 percent of the insults against players had a racist background. The proportion of homophobic hate messages was even greater (40 percent).

Big differences between the European Championship final and the Africa Cup final also stand out. Of the insults after the duel between Italy and England, an incredible 78 percent were racist. The majority (62 percent) of hate messages after Senegal’s triumph were homophobic in nature.

Filters are not enough – can Fifa tool help?

England’s Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho got the worst of it. The three had to endure a huge wave of racism after their missed penalties. Despite filters on platforms such as Twitter and Instagram, 58 percent of insults are still posted, according to the study.

However, the supposed anonymity of social media tends not to be the case in reality. Around nine out of ten comments could be traced. This would mean that consequences could be enforced in most cases.

That’s why Fifa now wants to launch a moderation tool together with the players’ union Fifpro to protect participants in major tournaments. The double standard cannot be dismissed out of hand: After all, this winter the World Cup will be held in Qatar – a country where is even enshrined in law.
