Those who participate in the rated mode of Overwatch usually want to successively play their way up the rankings. Not so Dale “Bacontotem” Brown. His goal was to reach the lowest rank that the Blizzard shooter has to offer. In an interview with Kotaku, the gamer tells us how much work it actually took to become one of the worst Overwatch players in the world. Below we have summarized the most important findings of the interesting article.
It all started with the realization that one’s skills weren’t good enough to reach the place in the sun in Overwatch’s rated mode or to attract people to the Twitch channel. So Brown wondered, what’s it like at the bottom of the leaderboard?
“I’m not too good at shooters. Let’s see how bad I can get in Overwatch.”
The gamer decided to go for Hanzo on his journey. He started out in the middle range (rank 40 – 50) and after a few defeats he had already lost a few places in the rankings.
“In the 40-ranked range, I mostly met people who really put in the work and worked together. They were about my normal level, winning regularly but giving up even more games. Then in the upper 30s, I met players who still had at least the vague hope of improvement.”
The dim hope turned to real anger the lower he got, Brown met here “the angriest people in the world.” From their comments, Brown gathered that they actually thought of themselves as stronger than their rank reflected. But this was often not the case.
At rank 18, the gamer then hit a real wall for the first time. There were so few players at this level that he had to constantly compete against players with a higher rank. However, this automatically gave him the “underdog” bonus, thanks to which every unexpected victory had a double negative effect on his plan.
He found another challenge in the skill of his opponents and teammates – who simply were not good. Junkrats dying from their own grenades were commonplace. So were Pharas who didn’t know how to fly. And next to the Widowmakers at that rank, Brown felt like the “best Sniper in the World” before.
He first tried to compensate for both by imposing artificial handicaps on himself. For example, he reduced the resolution and played only with a controller. When that didn’t help, he got together with like-minded people, which he found in the forum of somethingawful, among others.
But even with this “Suicide Squad” by his side, it took months to reach rank 1. If you’re wondering what happens when things go even deeper downhill, Brown figured it out: Overwatch automatically adjusts progress back up to rank 1.
