CoD Modern Warfare 2 surprises with multi-layered Gunsmith for weapon hobbyists
With this new video, Infinity Ward actually wanted to finally explain the new Gunsmith in CoD Modern Warfare 2, but among the community, the clip first caused many question marks over the heads: “Am I just stupid or is this totally confusing?”, writes one user under the developer’s tweet and earns hundreds of upvotes.
Less Grind
Unlocking weapon attachments has been one of the basic motivating factors in the series ever since CoD 4: I’m constantly chasing after the new target sight, a grip or a silencer to finally craft my dream build. But there was a catch to the unlock spiral: I actually unlock the same thing over and over again, just for a different weapon.
Especially CoD Vanguard clearly overstimulated the system: With every new weapon, the unlock marathon starts all over again and at some point, the unlocks don’t really come as a surprise anymore – as if I would just grind through the same skill tree over and over again in a role-playing game.
MW2 puts an elegant end to this: New guns within a weapon family share the already unlocked attachments! So if I’ve been playing the M4 for a while and have already unlocked my favorite handle, I can just take it with me after switching to the M16 and use it immediately.
So there’s no need for a new leveling process through the same attachments, and I can get my dream kit much faster than before. This is made possible by the new receivers, which are like the chassis of a real weapon and can be easily exchanged. In this way, I build up a complex arsenal within a weapon family, in which I can happily switch attachments back and forth. So the whole thing sounds complicated, but it’s actually simple, convenient, and also much more realistic than CoD’s old armories.
More claim
The fact that Call of Duty dares to be more complex is a great sign. Infinity Ward is signaling to us as players, “Hey, we dare you to have a really extensive and not immediately understandable weapon system here, you’ll get it!”
Call of Duty has a reputation among many gamers for being an extremely simple shooter game that is supposedly played primarily by teenagers. The fact that CoD is starting to fish in the waters of realism monsters like Escape from Tarkov would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.
DMZ in CoD: Will the attack on Tarkov begin?
Sure Tarkov is another step above MW2 in terms of weapon conversions, but the thrust is clear: to get everything out of this new Gunsmith system, we’re going to have to look hard at the new options and experiment.
And that’s what I find extremely exciting: finally, Call of Duty trusts me to be my own lucky gunsmith – literally! A multi-layered weapon-building simulation with fine-tuning down to the last detail opens up an completely new dimension for the series.
For all those who are worried that they will fall on their noses with crazy Frankenstein guns in the game, Infinity Ward also has an answer: the training ground! For the first time we are allowed to test our Gunsmith creations in a separate shooting range in all peace.
And yes, I can totally understand that some players are now overwhelmed for the first time that the call for simpler CoD times in the social media is loud again. But for me the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages: CoD is becoming a bit more adult, gives me more confidence as a player than ever before, and opens up sandbox worlds that I would have previously rather assumed in a Battlefield.
