Welcome to the second part of our article about the controversial LEC star Konstantinos-Napoleon “FORG1VEN” Tzortziou. If you missed the first part you can catch up here. For now, we’ll pick up where we left off: Forg1ven had split from Gambit.
Forg1ven was back in the EU LCS at the next split, this time as part of H2K. There he once again showed his skills on Bot Lane, securing his team a second place finish in the regular split, as well as a win in the semifinals of the 2016 IEM – Season 10 World Championship.
H2K and back again
This is also where the ticking of the time bomb that could threaten his career was first heard: According to Greek law, Forg1ven has to serve nine months of military service. He got a reprieve for the time being and played for H2K in the playoffs, but the team stumbled in the semifinals and lost the best-of-five to Fnatic.
As expected, Forg1ven started the new split with another team again – Origen. However, this team found itself in a death spiral of retiring players, poor management and internal politics. After several miserable games, the Greek AD Carry left the organization, citing a breach of trust by the management. He even announced his intention to retire from LoL altogether or move to Overwatch.
With the playoffs around the corner, however, luck returned: his former organization H2K lost their AD carry, Aleš “Freeze” Kněžínek. Forg1ven played the end of the – Season and playoffs for them – and helped them participate in the League of Legends World Championship.
It was the Greek’s first World Championship – and he was determined to win it. H2K drew a difficult group with China’s top team EDG, Taiwan’s AHQ eSports club and Brazil’s INTZ. With these opponents, many expected H2K to fight for second place in this group. However, after an incredible second week, they drew even with EDG and even beat them in the tie-breaker. For Forg1ven, this win was all the sweeter because he was able to prove himself against a player like EDG’s Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu.
H2K just flew through the quarterfinals and also defeated crowd favorite Albus Nox Luna before being eliminated in the semifinals against Samsung Galaxy. Nonetheless, this was a remarkable achievement that would not be surpassed again by a European team until 2019. At the same time, this moment also marked the pinnacle of Forg1ven’s career.
The long fall
But despite ending 2016 so successfully, Forg1ven spent the next three years away from the professional scene. After about a year in various amateur teams, he joined Origen again for the 2018 EU Spring Masters and even led the team to victory after a shaky start. Soon after, however, he took some time off to do his military service. Although this already ended in spring 2019, he could not find a team for the summer split.
Surprisingly, FC Schalke 04 signed the Greek as an AD carry in the spring of 2020. Returning after such a long time outside the first leagues is the absolute exception and has not happened often. Moreover, Forg1ven’s problems with his former teams made fans suspicious, because in the three years he was away, the professional scene had changed.
Despite supposedly good performances in scrims, Schalke was collecting defeat after defeat on the stage. While the defeats were close in the first week, they were downright destroyed by Fnatic in the second week. This threw the team completely off track. Drive and determination were at an all-time low, there was little coordination and heavy misplays on all lanes.
The team changed junglers, but when that didn’t help either, Schalke announced that it was bringing in its backup AD Carry, Nihat “Innaxe” Aliev. Forg1ven was benched – and he made it worse. On Twitter, he complained about the bad team and blamed the organization for not being willing to change anything. It was therefore agreed that he would resign until management did something.
To say that the community didn’t take it well would be an understatement. Forg1ven was condemned in the strongest terms, even by those who had always defended him before, like Dunkan “Thooorin” Shields. And it came even harder for Forg1ven.
Schalke actually won an unexpected but well-deserved victory. In their second match with Innaxe, they won against none other than G2 Esports. And just a week later, the next victory followed against Team Vitality. Without Forg1ven, Schalke simply played better.
Where do things go from here?
Although his career is as storied as it is controversial, in all likelihood we won’t see Forg1ven on the professional scene again. He is already one of the older players and is now considered quite unreliable. It was quite significant that he never stayed longer than a split with the same organization.
His brief stint at Schalke and his sudden departure showed two things: first, that he is no longer the dominant AD carry of old, and second, that his time in the military apparently failed to calm his quick-tempered temper.
Draw your own conclusions: After their Week 4 win, Schalke’s Reddit spokesperson praised Innaxe for his communication and positive demeanor – presumably with a nod to his predecessor. Innaxe himself also took a small side swipe at Forg1ven, copying his typical “shh” gesture as he high-fived fans.
So what caused the rise and fall of Forg1ven? Certainly not a lack of skill – several players inside and outside the team have attested to the fact that he still has it. Yes, he hasn’t always looked good on stage, but an AD carry actually depends on his team as well. There have been plenty of other examples of this, such as Steven “Hans sama” Liv’s disastrous 2019.
A much bigger problem has been Forg1ven’s negativity and tendency to give up on his teammates. When things are going well he is a good, albeit demanding, player. But when the match goes badly, he seems to quickly lose motivation and patience with his teammates – and so far no one has found a way to bring it back to him. The fact that Schalke praised Innaxe’s motivation and positive attitude after his first win speaks volumes.
Even more shocking is the fact that as a professional player he leaves a team in the middle of a split. This is in contrast to another famous AD carry – Yiliang “Doublelift” Peng. Doublelift is a player who is famous for his smack talk, among other things – he also had problems with his teammates several times, but was always focused on winning.
Likewise, many had compared Forg1ven to his former Origen teammate, Paul “sOAZ” Boyer, as a problem player. But the Frenchman, has often proven that although a bit of a prima donna at times, he carries the team at crucial moments. SOAZ is not a quitter – and this stamp will be difficult to get rid of Forg1ven.
Maybe this is not a goodbye. Maybe Forg1ven will come back somehow – ideally to write a few more chapters in his career. That would indeed be an impressive story. But unfortunately, it is much more likely that his professional career is over.
Overwatch
Overwatch is a computer game by Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo 3, World of Warcraft) and a first-person shooter with individual fantasy elements. The game was released in May 2016.
In Overwatch, the player must choose between 21 unique characters, which can be freely selected in a loosely held classification system (offensive and defensive class, support unit and tanks).
A character’s three to four different abilities can be controlled and activated through the mouse and keyboard. The game modes already vary from scoring points to cargo hauling. Team play is required in both modes, as each character takes on a specific role in the battlefield (e.g. heal teammates, provide backup, or secure defensive lines).
The name Overwatch derives itself from a fictional elite military unit that came together when robots tried to subjugate humanity in a near future. Individual characters are associated with this unit in the game, while others oppose it. It is not yet known whether the storyline will continue in multiplayer.
Brawl
Brawl is a game mode in which time-limited rule variations of the well-known modes are drawn. Sometimes completely new game modes are used in Brawls.
Rule variations include, for example, the restriction to certain heroes or classes, changes to the cool-down times or certain cards. New game modes that have been playable so far include a soccer game and a PvE mode.
Usually, Brawls are restarted as Brawl of the Week every Tuesday at 22:00 UTC and are then playable for a week. On certain occasions, such as – Season al events, Brawls may also be playable for a longer or shorter period of time.
The game mode is comparable to the card chaos from Hearthstone and was activated for the first time in the beta phase on March 22, 2016 through a patch.
