The Xbox dominates numerous game genres. And over the past 20 years, there’s hardly been a genre where Microsoft’s console hasn’t been able to get a foothold. However, there are a few exceptions that are still not covered on the Xbox today. Here, either other consoles or the smartphone market dominate. We have taken a look at which genres have not made it on the Xbox so far and have tried to find a few reasons for that.
Casino games
The best example of a genre not covered by the Xbox is casino games. While there are a few ways to play casino slots on the Xbox, Microsoft’s console doesn’t have a strong market position here. There are many reasons for this! One reason why the Xbox only covers this genre to a limited extent? The optimal synergy between casino games and smartphones. Casino games are perfect for smartphones, since you can take them everywhere and always have them with you anyway. Besides, you don’t need a big screen for online gambling. So competing with that makes little sense for Microsoft. It is therefore not surprising that this genre hardly plays a role on the Xbox.
RTS Games
Real Time Strategy (RTS) games are another example of Microsoft not covering all genres with the Xbox. Of course there are RTS games for the Xbox! But these do not dominate the market or the respective genre. Halo is the most famous example. Even though the success of Halo is unique and has helped the entire genre, you can’t say that RTS games are dominated by the Xbox. This is partly due to the fact that there are already numerous gaming options for the PlayStation. In addition, mobile gaming is made for this particular genre. Smartphones and RTS games are a perfect pair. The synergies that are created here cannot be replaced 1:1 by the classic consoles. At the same time, it is also the genre with the greatest potential for future growth for Xbox. Especially with the purchase of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft might have succeeded in taking an important step here. It will be interesting to see how the acquisition is integrated into the Xbox offering and what impact this will have on games in the genres mentioned here.
MOBA Games
The third genre that does not dominate on Xbox is moba games. Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games are currently probably best represented by League of Legends and Dota 2 worldwide. This subgenre of strategy games provides another example of how Microsoft does not dominate every genre. Similar to the RTS games, the reasons for this are obvious. The strong competition from PlayStation and mobile gaming play a decisive role. Both platforms offer gamers the opportunity to have a similar gaming experience. However, as with RTS games, we believe that Xbox will become more dominant. Microsoft has grown to be a giant in the games industry in recent years. This is not only due to the Xbox. We expect the Xbox and Microsoft’s game offerings to take market share away from rivals Playstation and Sony in the coming years. At the same time, it would not be surprising if the game offering for the Xbox becomes far larger and more dominant. This is especially true for these two genres due to the popularity of RTS and MOBA games.
This is because Microsoft is pursuing a plan that Sony will have a hard time countering. Microsoft is clearly on the rise and about to dominate the gaming industry. In order to achieve this goal, they need to expand their game lineup. After all, the currently popular consoles will no longer play a role in a few years. Microsoft’s strategy is to move away from the console and towards an offering that is more future-oriented and accessible. Sony hasn’t jumped on this bandwagon yet, in our view. Neither has Nintendo! Therefore, we assume that Microsoft will also dominate the genres that the company has not yet played so strongly in the future. This is certainly good news for gamers, because they have a good chance of getting more choice from Microsoft in the future. This does not mean that all other vendors and consoles will disappear overnight. But it can be assumed that the market power of Microsoft and the Xbox will increase in the coming years.
