The new Iron Trials mode has crept into Call of Duty: Warzone quite inconspicuously with the last patch. Some may have completely overlooked it until now, but it is currently causing a lot of excitement among many players.
We explain what Iron Trials is all about and why many players want the mode to become a permanent part of Battle Royale.
How Iron Trials works
The rules are rewritten here so that skill and tactics play the central role – something many players have been desperately wanting from Warzone for a long time. Iron Trials is played as usual on Verdansk ’84 and with a maximum of 150 players, but with a few serious changes:
- High TTK: You now have significantly more life, 400 (fully equipped) instead of 250 (fully equipped). This increases the time to kill, i.e. you die slower. On the other hand, you have to hit more often until an enemy falls down.
- Faster rounds: The time limit is shorter and the death zone moves faster, making a match run about two minutes more briskly than normal. Campers have a harder time as a result, and frequent movement is rewarded.
- Sniper less powerful: A headshot from a sniper rifle no longer sends players to the ground immediately by default, but only within 30 meters. This means that you can often still react well to sniper fire.
- Prices adjusted: No more free loadout drops, you always have to order equipment from buy stations now. The cost of armor, reconnaissance drones and so on has increased, so there are fewer UAVs flying over your heads.
- Fewer vehicles: Helicopters & Co. fly out, in Iron Trials only dirt bikes and ATVs are available. So there is clearly more emphasis on pure infantry combat.
- Other Loot: You’ll find epic and legendary weapons much less often, fewer killstreaks, and smaller amounts of money. This means that you’ll have to think more carefully about how to capture as many crates as possible, and contracts will also become more important again.
Other adjustments make snipers less deadly at long ranges, weaken stun grenades, and lower health regeneration. Thus, Iron Trials differs significantly from the rest of the content of the current – Season 5 Reloaded:

What do the changes mean specifically? The new ruleset makes Iron Trials play quite differently from the normal Battle Royale. Seemingly paradoxically, the mode appeals to both experienced players and beginners. On the one hand, tactical skill, teamwork and skill are now rewarded much more, while on the other hand you have much more time to react when you are attacked. The low TTK in Warzone always causes heated discussions.
On the other hand, the mode is not very suitable for campers – which in turn pleases the majority of the Warzone community very much.
The balancing also changes noticeably: It’s much more important again to be confident with the weapon in question, as it now takes more hits to eliminate an enemy – and less important to use one of the current meta-weapons, which are simply stronger than the rest.
How players find the mode
In the forums and social media, many players are enthusiastic about the new gameplay of Iron Trials. On Reddit, for example, there is a petition to convince the developers to offer the mode permanently.
Other threads would like to see Iron Trials also available as Solo, Trio, and Quad, or even be directly chosen as Warzone’s new standard, preferably in time for integration with CoD Vanguard.

Will Iron Trials stay? Right now, it’s a limited-time mode that can only be played as a duo. However, after so much praise and exuberance from players, it is very likely that Iron Trials will appear more often in the playlist rotation. Some hope that it will evolve into a ranked mode for Warzone. However, it’s impossible to say for sure at this point whether it will actually become permanently playable.
What else is happening in Warzone? Before the end of the year, the long-awaited anti-cheat and the new Pacific map that replaces Verdansk are to be released. We have all the info for you!
