The developers behind the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 have allowed us an advance look at many innovations of the shooter. As part of our “Find Your Next Game” campaign, we present the 5 most important innovations and MeinMMO author Maik Schneider explains why he is already raving about Warzone 2.
The biggest shooter franchise in the world has suffered a bit in the last two years. Problems with the battle royale Warzone, a rather mediocre Cold War and poor sales of the World War II shooter Vanguard have hurt Call of Duty.
Despite this, Call of Duty remains a force in the video game market, thrilling many millions of gamers even with CoD: Vanguard and bringing back a setting in 2022 that probably appeals to most gamers in the series, Modern Warfare or even CoD MW.
CoD MW 2019 was Call of Duty’s most successful paid title to date, and it’s getting a sequel in 2022 – Modern Warfare 2. We at MeinMMO didn’t get to play in advance, but we did get a comprehensive look at the game, thanks to a big developer presentation.
We present the 5 most important new features from the presentation in detail and give you more background information. In addition, we give you a small preview of what you can expect in Warzone 2. Modern Warfare 2 will be released on October 28 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series and on PC in the Battle.net launcher and on Steam. Warzone 2 is considered an expansion of CoD MW2 and uses the same technology. The battle royale is expected to be announced later this year, but currently has no release date. It will probably be a Free2Play shooter again.
1. artificial intelligence – realistic behavior
NPC soldiers are a fundamental mainstay of CoD games. But they were never really known for their intelligence. They were nothing more than a means to an end – after all, you need enemies in a story shooter. And that’s exactly what CoD was at the very beginning. With Modern Warfare 2, the entire system was upgraded and greatly improved. In addition, NPCs are supposed to play a role in more and more multiplayer modes – and also in Warzone 2.
For this purpose, the developers have analyzed combat procedures together with trained fighters and adapted them for NPCs. These include, for example:
- Body language
- Environment and space exploration
- Behavior outside of combat
This leads to a whole new behavior of the computer soldiers, which is quite impressive. The NPCs no longer just walk along a corner. They check the field of view beforehand and thoroughly check the rooms. Their detailed animations make it all look very lively. This adds more immersion and also just looks good. How this new level of “intelligence” will affect the actual battles, however, can’t be said for sure at the moment.
2nd Water – A new core feature of CoD
CoD: Cold War from 2020 already dabbled with water gameplay, but didn’t put the feature front and center as much. Modern Warfare 2 takes this a step further and officially declares water to be a core feature of Call of Duty. The developers showed a lot of passion on the topic and tried to explain why it’s so important to them. There was also a side hustle on Warzone: before the Pacific map, it was enough to stick your toe in the water and you’d go down. In Modern Warfare 2, you can swim in any puddle – or in the choppy sea. It makes a difference how dirty the water is and whether it’s calm or stormy. This also means that there are many new gameplay options around water. You can dive deep and explore things, pull down enemies that are close to the water, and the rules of fired bullets are also different. You lose bullet speed and damage if you have to go through water.
Water plays a big role in CoD MW2
Even vehicles work together with water. However, the vehicles sink and are eventually destroyed. But with enough momentum you should be able to “drive” a little on water. In addition, there are certain pieces of equipment that interact with the water. As an example, the proximity mines were brought – they blow up a small cushion of air and then float on the surface. They are then effective against water vehicles. Incidentally, to give all players a consistent experience, the ripples of water in multiplayer modes are calculated server-side. So every player in a match sees the same waves. Only the subtleties of the water surface are handled by the player client.
3rd Weaponsmith – More control, more options
In this item, we paid special attention to detail. Also, because the segment with the weaponsmith was rather short. In any case, there will be a weaponsmith again and it should offer more depth than ever before. Here are a few details in comparison to CoD MW 2019:
- There are 10 essay slots again
- Probably 5 essays can be used at the same time again
- Instead of the attachment “Extra” there are now ammunition types like in Vanguard
- You unlock weapons not via levels, but via a kind of weapon family tree
- If you play weapons from the family tree, you unlock progress there
- There are attachments that you can use directly on any weapon in this family tree
- Individual weapons then bring unique attachments
- Positive and negative features are more clearly contrasted
- Overall, the influence on the weapon values should become even greater
The comparisons of values were particularly exciting. This gives you more control and oversight over what you give up for a particular advantage. The developers even called it “a game within a game”. In the example, the “Heavy” and “Light” properties were opposite each other. If you make a weapon “heavier” with an attachment, the recoil is lower. If you go for “light” weapons, you will be targeted faster. The new weaponsmith also provides better accessibility. Since you unlock certain attachments from weapon classes in an “attachment pool”, you don’t have to start from scratch with new weapons – the pool attachments are available to you right when you unlock the weapon. Modern Warfare 2’s new weaponsmith solves a major newcomer problem from Warzone.
4th vehicles – damage models and combat mechanics
Another greatly expanded mechanic is the vehicles. The animations in Warzone and CoD MW 2019 were rather utilitarian. In CoD MW2, vehicles have the potential to become a fun feature. For example, you can get out of the window while driving and get onto cargo space – for example, in the case of a truck. If you just want to take enemies under fire, then you can lean out of the window and have a complete 360° all-round view. The complete maneuvers can also be performed by the driver, who was still condemned to “watch and accelerate” in CoD MW 2019 and Warzone.
The vehicles also have a damage model, but how deep that goes isn’t entirely clear yet. You can shoot tires, which affects the handling of the vehicles. Doors can also be “removed”, which takes away the possibility of the occupant leaning out of the window there. Damage to vehicles can also be repaired if you survive the sheet metal battle reasonably unscathed, but the car looks like it’s been through a stock car derby.
5th Movement Options – Enable new tactics
CoD MW 2019 introduced two mechanics to the game at the time, Tactical Sprint and Weapon Layup, which changed the series significantly. With this, CoD finally moved away from jetpack gameplay and focused more on normal, “human” movement mechanics. For CoD MW2 there are again 2 new mechanics:
The “Dive” is more or less the opposite action to the “Slide”. Instead of sliding a bit, you lay down directly on your belly. Sliding/sliding remains in the game, though. But it is not only about quick cover. As an example, it was said that you can also use the dive to quickly jump out of a window. The “Ledge Hang” is an extension of the movement options on ladders or ledges. On a ladder in CoD MW2 you can aim your weapon upwards and are no longer unprotected when enemies are on top. In addition, enemies can be grabbed and thrown down. The options for scouting at ledges also improve. The whole thing goes under the heading of “platforming” and significantly expands the options in vertical gameplay.
More details – campaign, multiplayer, weapons
The developers have already provided a decent look at the campaign and presented 6 missions. The missions were mostly a kind of “showcase” of the new features:
- On an oil rig you experience the raging sea
- There is a lot of swimming in a stealth mission
- A car chase shows off the new vehicle mechanics and any enemy vehicle can theoretically be taken over
Also on display was a mission with night vision devices in which an area is infiltrated. This was a hit in CoD MW 2019 and of course can’t be missing in the sequel.
Fans of the series will also be pleased to see a brief mention of a sniper mission. We crawl through the mission with Captain Price in a ghillie suit, taking out important targets – just like in the old Modern Warfare games.
In the course of the missions we could already discover you some weapons. However, the weapons mostly don’t bear the name of their real-world counterparts:
- M16
- K-Bloc
- LACH-56
- Bryson 500
- Expedite 12
- M4 M203
- (DM_MIKE24)
- 1911
- Vector
- AK-47
- .458 Socom
- LMG Fightlight
In multiplayer, CoD wants to be more responsive to actual play styles and has thought hard about how to support the 3 identified play styles, for more gameplay possibilities.
- Rusher: Aggressive player, focus on kills
- Sentinel: Stationary player, focus on security
- Stalker: Mobile player, focus on tactics
Innovations or changes to gameplay are now always supposed to be developed in a way that supports play styles. The developers have indicated that some ideas were discarded because they did not fit into the scheme of this approach. This affects the basic structure of maps, but also general gameplay mechanics such as movement or equipment.
Fittingly, 3 new devices were also announced that are available in multiplayer:
- Placeable cameras with tracking functions
- The Drill Charge can drill shells through walls
- A DDOS device can disable enemy equipment and also temporarily disable vehicles
Personal conclusion: Best prospects for Warzone 2
Once Modern Warfare 2 comes out, it will already be the 14th paid Call of Duty title I’ve followed as a fan. But the multiplayer mode was interesting for me, as for so many other gamers, for a few weeks at most, a few months at most. Warzone has been grabbing me for over years now though.
And while I’m hot for CoD MW2, I kept thinking about the possibilities of the new features for Warzone 2 as I worked through the info. By the way, the name “Warzone 2” hasn’t been finalized yet. The developers have repeatedly indicated that all of these features and technical underpinnings will also be part of the new Warzone: Smarter NPCs, water mechanics, better vehicle feel, more movement techniques, a sophisticated weaponsmith, new equipment – there’s a lot going on.
Even if none of this really sounds “revolutionary” or “groundbreaking”, in gameplay detail it’s exactly these changes that define the gameplay experience in a shooter and make the big difference. This is especially true in a battle royale like Warzone, which takes more of a sandbox approach. Every little action, every little mechanic expands my options and allows for new tactics. And with one look at the innovations, I can see good prospects. CoD MW 2019 was the most successful Call of Duty yet, and I find it fitting that the developers aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel here. It’s “just” getting a bit more rounded again.
Also, I like the new philosophy with the different player types and that they want to bring new content and mechanics with an eye on how players actually play. Although I do wonder here how that was done in the past then. All in all, I’m looking forward to the new Modern Warfare 2 and eagerly await more details to come out in the near future. Gladly more about Warzone 2 as well, of course.
