For a long time, the Pro Evolution Soccer series fought with FIFA for supremacy on the virtual pitch. Quite rightly, many players described the soccer simulations from Konami as the better implementation of the real sport. Last year, however, the Japanese developer and publisher drastically changed the concept behind their soccer field spectacle and now relies on a Free2Play model with planned microtransactions.
The result is called eFootball 2022. The soccer simulation managed to completely flop on all platforms and developed into perhaps the worst game of 2021. On Metacritic, the hated project still stands at a Metascore of just 25. Battlefield 2042, which also came under criticism, does comparatively well in contrast with a score of 68. The situation is very similar on Steam: Only 15 percent of all user reviews are positive; last year, the soccer simulation was considered the worst game of all time with only nine percent positive reviews.
Now everything will be better … or not?

After more than six months of fine-tuning, Konami now promises a much better gameplay, more scope and, above all, fewer bugs with update 1.0.0. But even before the first game, the disappointments continue.
Even the introduction to the new Dreamteam mode, which basically works like EA’s Ultimate Team counterpart, is so bland, every wallflower shines with charisma in contrast. As in FIFA, we earn coins by completing matches, which in turn allow us to improve our team.
Of course, the system can also be financed with real money. After all, the euro sign in the logo is program. However, we will not be able to see the store until the start of the first – Season on April 21. With eFootball points we can also exchange players or training items. However, we need a Konami ID for this, otherwise the trade won’t work at all.
We also doubt from the ground up that the whole online model will be profitable for Konami. It remains to be seen whether the three remaining fans will manage to pump so much money into the game that the Japanese developer will still get something out of it after the botched release.

Already on the launch day of the update, we had problems finding an opponent in the online area. That doesn’t exactly speak for a high number of players. In addition, there are also jerks and disconnections when we do manage to get a game going.
Besides Dreamteam, we also have the Authentic Team mode at our disposal. What this stinking normal trial mode has to do with authenticity remains a mystery. Since the release at the end of September, hardly anything has changed here. We still choose from nine teams and compete against the AI or a human opponent.
In addition to FC Bayern Munich, four European and four South American clubs are still in the game. At least the stadiums of River Plate, Flamengo and Co. have made it into the game in the meantime. So we can compete in a total of ten arenas – nine official and one designed by Konami.
