“League of Legends” is one of the most well-known and popular video games ever. Twelve years after its release, the MOBA still has an active player base of over 100 million active users. The more than 100 champions, as the game characters are called in the jargon, were all equipped with a deep background story, and the game world was expanded with different games such as “Legends of Runeterra”.
So now the first series in this universe comes to Netflix with “Arcane”. We were already able to watch the first four episodes and reveal in this preview whether the animation spectacle is also worthwhile for the uninitiated (spoiler: it is!).
Arcane: This is what the “LoL” series Netflix is about
In “Arcane” everything revolves around the brother and sister Vi and Powder. The two live in Zhaun, the slums beneath the progressive city of Piltover. After a failed rebellion by the undercitizens, bar owner Vander took in the orphans. To stay afloat, Vi and Powder plan to rob a lab in Piltover with their friends – setting off a chain of events that will change the world and their relationship with each other forever.

The first thing that caught the eye in “Arcane” already in the trailer was the animation style. And in the finished series, too, the visuals are one of the big highlights. The backgrounds are wonderfully detailed, the steampunk-esque world of Piltover makes a stark contrast to the mustiness and mud in Zhaun. This directly shows why these two worlds can’t stand each other – not very subtle, but effective.

This contrast can also be seen in the drawings of the protagonists: Especially in the characters from Zhaun there are a lot of rugged lines, while the characters from Piltover come across much more filigree. When the creators start working with particle effects or when individual drops of sweat become visible in slow motion, you can’t help but be amazed. Because that is great animation art.
“Arcane”: Dark and serious | Netflix
This masterstroke continues in the action. “Arcane” is fast, downright hectic in the right places. This could quickly become too much for one or the other, but it underlines the corresponding situations perfectly. When it comes to fight sequences, it quickly becomes clear that this is not a children’s series. Every blow has force and the characters bleed from their wounds. The audience quickly realizes that there is nothing to laugh about here.
This dark and serious approach also runs through the story and the dialogues. Too much should not be anticipated, only this much: “Arcane” does nothing groundbreaking new, but already sets enough accents at the beginning to always remain interesting and is frighteningly consistent in many places. A bit too many characters are introduced at the beginning, but every development from the first episodes shows that there is still a lot to come.
And that’s the series’ other masterstroke: you need absolutely no prior knowledge to have your fun. True, various characters appear that “League of Legends” fans are familiar with, and a reveal falls flat for non-experts, but overall the world very quickly draws the viewer:inside under its spell. Accordingly, it is annoying that the individual acts are released very sporadically.

In the first four episodes, “Arcane” already shoots a lot of powder – whether it was too much, remains to be seen. Because every Sunday new episodes are unlocked at Netflix, as follows:

The new episodes are always released at 9:00 am local time. And we are curious how the story around Vi, Powder/Jinx, Jayce and Viktor will continue and if the high level of the beginning can be maintained.
