The South Korean team T1 has a long and extremely successful history in the MOBA title “League of Legends” – it is the record champion in the domestic LCK and multiple World Cup winner. However, this has also created a fanbase spoiled for success, which is anything but satisfied when titles aren’t regularly cleared. After a dominant Spring – Season 2022, T1 currently finds itself trailing Gen.G Esports in the LCK, which a minority of very vocal fans don’t like at all.
Fans demand dismissal of coaches
As in many other sports, a culprit is quickly found: the coaching staff. T1 is currently led by former “StarCraft 2” pro Seong-hun “Polt” Choi, while ex-“League of Legends” players Ji-hwan “Moment” Kim and Seong-woong “Bengi” Bae act as co-trainers.
A few fans have now resorted to an unusual measure to vent their anger: A group rented a truck, which they parked near the venue during a T1 LCK game. On it was a critical message in the direction of the T1 coaches: “Incompetent head coach. Coach whose relegation showed his lack of skills. The answer is hire coaches who won Worlds.”
T1 CEO Joe Marsh fired at. Twitter Back: “100 ‘fans’ wasted their money on a truck. They don’t speak for the other million fans. You forgot to mention that we had ‘coaches who won Worlds’ in 2020 and 2021. One didn’t make it to Worlds, the other was replaced mid– Season .”
Internally, the current staff, which has led T1 out of a long malaise of failures, enjoys strong support.
This latest drama is not the only problem teams from South Korea have with their fans: T1 star player Sang-hyeok “Faker” Lee recently filed charges against some supporters who spread hate messages against him on the net, while the KT Rolster team has received death threats from so-called fans.
