When Overwatch 2 celebrates its release on October 4, 2022, it will also follow the change from a full-price game to a classic Free2Play shooter. Of course, this also means that Blizzard will have to earn the money in a different way. In doing so, the developers aren’t particularly creative, instead relying on a traditional in-game store. Skins, sprays and whatever else you could earn in the first part must now be paid for with hard euros or dollars.
This is nothing unusual and perfectly okay. However, such a store stands and falls with the called prices. These should be halfway within the range that players are willing to pay. And in view of this, prior surveys of the target group are also part of the normal procedure. The Blizzard developers have now sent out such a survey among some Overwatch players.
45 US dollars for a! single! Skin!
In the survey, the developers tapped how likely players would be to buy a skin at a given price – from very likely to very unlikely. The following prices were asked for the skins:
- 44.99 US dollars for a mythical hero skin
- 24.99 US dollars for a legendary hero skin
- 9.99 US dollars for a weapon pendant
The latter are new cosmetic items in Overwatch 2 that you can hang on your weapon. This would make a mythical hero skin cost more than Overwatch 1 did at the time. Not to mention that hardly any other game charges such prices for the skins.
The developers row back
Meanwhile, the developers have tried to row back a little. The developers told PCGamesN that they didn’t want to test the prices, but only to find out the preferences of the players regarding the skins. Allegedly, different players would also be shown different price designs. We are not experts in surveys or store design, but somehow this seems strange to us. What else is the question “Would you buy a skin for X Euro?” supposed to say, except to find out up to which price enough players answer “Yes”?
Let’s hope that enough players answer “No way” at these prices so that the developers understand that a single skin should not be as expensive as a full-price game. But Diablo Immortal has already shown that there are always players who know no limit and no measure anyway. But at least the hero skins in Overwatch don’t matter at all in terms of gameplay, since they don’t have any influence on the gameplay.
