Twitch streamer Madi “itsmerku” asked her mother to celebrate her new rank in the shooter Valorant with her. The streamer meant it as a joke. However, the mother was genuinely happy and touched not only her daughter, but also the Internet with her reaction.
Who is itsmerku?
- Itsmerku is a Canadian streamer of Chinese descent
- She has been streaming on Twitch since August 2020, where she particularly enjoys showing off Riot’s shooter Valorant
- With just over 4,600 followers she is one of the smaller streamers on Twitch, she also has a TikTok account with just under 50,000 followers
- According to her Twitch bio, Madi is 20 years old and studying
Itsmerku wants to celebrate new rank with her mother
This performance is what it’s all about: On August 18, itsmerku published about Twitter a conversation with her mother. In it, she explained that she was on the verge of advancing to the Platinum rank in Valorant, lacking only one victory. If she managed to advance, she wanted to celebrate the event with her mother for fun.
Why is this a big deal? From “Iron” to “Radiant”, there are a total of 9 different ranks in Valorant, all of which – except for the best rank – are again divided into 3 tiers. Platinum is right in the middle and the fifth highest rank.
So to some, platinum may not sound like a special achievement. However, Itsmerku stated that she had previously been on the “really bad” ranks. For her, she said, it was the biggest achievement in the game to date.
Unlike Trymacs, she has achieved her rank on her own merit, after all.
German Twitch streamer documents his way to the top of Valorant, but many are pissed: “Honorless”.
Here’s how the mother reacted: For itsmerku’s mother, a joke celebration was out of the question at all. She said the celebration could be real as long as the streamer considered the climb an achievement. She then asked her daughter how she would like to celebrate. Only with a cake or also a dinner or lunch?
How did the streamer take the response? Itsmerku first seemed completely overwhelmed by her mother’s positive reaction. Apparently, she had expected a simple “no.” Finally, she decided to have a cake and lunch.
How does her mother justify the celebration: The streamer stressed that she would be all about her mother and was just happy that her mother was there. She said that a lunch at home was enough. But itsmerku’s mother saw it differently. After all, she said, it was a big deal.
Itsmerku’s mother also did not accept his reply that it was only a computer game:
“But not for you. Maybe for others. But what makes you happy is good.”
The mother of the Twitch streamer
She said she just wanted to acknowledge what was important to her daughter. After all, everyone has different interests.
By this time, itsmerku was noticeably moved and stated that she was close to tears. However, the mother followed up with, “As long as you are proud of your accomplishments, that makes me happy.” To this, itsmerku responded with crying emoji, but explained that they were tears of joy.
Did she make it then? Yes! Also on August 18, itsmerku posted that she had reached the platinum rank. While still in the stream, she called her mother to tell her the news. Her mother rejoiced with her and congratulated itsmerku, who thanked her for the support.
However, the mother also asked the streamer how much money she made from it all – after all, she needed to know if itsmerku had enough money to buy an ice cream cake. You can watch the call here, there is also a 2nd part. The two speak English.
Internet celebrates mother-daughter relationship
This is how the story gets around: On Twitter, itsmerku’s post got just under 50,000 likes, and the clip of her talking to her mother received just under 20,000 views – her other clips are under 50. itsmerku’s chat also reacted positively, celebrating the rise with her.
E-sports journalist Jake Lucky shared itsmerku’s conversation with her mother and the resulting conversation. To that end, he called for, “Normalize parents celebrating their kids’ gaming successes!” Many there were impressed with the mother and her support. (via Twitter)
There was a bit of grumbling, though. Not everyone thinks the achievement deserves a cake. But itsmerku explained why the whole thing was so important to her: she would be working full time and also going back to college in the fall.
Streamer touches on mother’s support because it used to be very different
So going platinum in Valorant isn’t her only accomplishment, but streaming is simply something she enjoys, she says. (via Twitter)
And her parents wouldn’t have always supported it. They would have wanted to discourage the streamer from becoming a content creator. Itsmerku’s mother used to react very negatively to her interests and even tore up her books because she liked reading – apparently too much.
So getting support from her parents now means a lot to her. Meanwhile, her mother has also directed her that her father is also very proud. To this the Streamerin says: “I feel a part of my soul heal.”
Not a few wish there, likewise such parents to have.
