Hunt: Showdown came out back in 2018, but has been considered an insider tip among shooter fans ever since. Now, however, the game is able to excite more people than ever before. We at MeinMMO take a look at why that is.
How many players does Hunt have? More than ever before, that’s for sure. On the evening of July 27, as many as 38,272 players were simultaneously playing the horror shooter on Steam. That’s even a whopping 4,000 more than the previous record in August 2021 (via steamcharts.com).
So the shooter itself hasn’t passed as an insider tip for quite some time. More than twice as many concurrent fans as New World sneak through the Louisiana bayou in Hunt. But where does the new record actually come from so suddenly?
The longest event yet: Among other things, the current Serpent Moon event is to blame. It started on July 27 and will remain in the game for 61 days. Unlike the previous events, however, it doesn’t bring any real gameplay innovations.
However, it does include the following things:
If you think that doesn’t sound like much content for a 61-day event, you’re not alone. While previous events could score with completely new weapons, a new boss or a new map, the Serpent Moon somehow lacks the big highlight.
The player peak is not due to the event, at least not alone
Where are the players coming from? It would be too easy to say that the new event is suddenly bringing so many players into the boat, or bayou. Because if we look at the overall picture of player numbers over the last few months, the event doesn’t bring as much as it seems.
After all, Hunt: Showdown had its real turning point back in March 2021 with the “As the crow Flies” event. At that time, Scrap Beak was introduced as a new and fourth boss and some thematically fitting skins found their way to Hunt.
Permanent Growth: While the player numbers in the months of December 2020 to February 2021 came to 15,500 at best, Scrap Beak nearly doubled its player numbers to 32,288. And this high was not to be broken.
With few exceptions, Hunt mostly stayed around 30,000 players. So the increase to 38,272 by the current Serpent Moon is not as relevant as it initially seems. The exception to this is the months of May and June 2022, when Hunt was very out of line and dropped off sharply, which is why the event is now more likely to bring back the players who stayed away from the bayou in the last two months.
A new legendary huntress also enters the bayou with the Serpent Moon event
Hunt: Showdown convinces, durable
Who plays, stays: If you evaluate the player numbers even further, it quickly becomes clear that Hunt: Showdown has been growing slowly but steadily since its release. The community is very attached to their game, which is immediately apparent in comments on reddit or Discord.
More often than not, you’ll hear comments like “I’m only buying the DLC now to support the developers”. New events, Twitch streamers, and advertising are important to get new people immersed in the shooter.
But the numbers clearly say that once people are there, they usually stay. Although the game’s core community always has something to complain about, they remain loyal to their game and have helped Hunt grow steadily over the years, and so far it doesn’t seem to be stopping.
The highlight, so far: Much more, Hunt: Showdown is currently at its peak so far. Even major and international streamers have currently taken notice of the shooter and are digging through the swamps of Hunt. Which, according to GameStar colleague Dimitry Halley, is largely responsible for Hunt’s current success.
Although the game is already a good 4 years old, Hunt will continue to grow for the time being. The currently popular genre of extraction shooters, to which Hunt: Showdown also belongs, is not the least to blame for this.
It is therefore also likely that we have not seen the last player peak in Hunt: Showdown with Serpent Moon.
The next big update should be, according to the numbering, “Update 2.0”. Maybe it will be the crocodile boss that players have been wishing for for a long time.
However, update 1.9 was already the highlight of Hunt for our author Mark Sellner, because he says: “In my favorite shooter on Steam, soon enemies won’t kill me after I’ve already won.
