State of Schleswig-Holstein establishes its own e-sports team

The state of announced on Tuesday an expansion of its e-sports support. E-sports talents from the northernmost state can apply for a place on the new “E-Sports Team Schleswig-Holstein” until May 6. The best players aged 12 and over for and FIFA would be sought.

The selection process would initially identify ten top talents, including at least two girls/women. The successful applicants could then benefit from at least 12 months of support from the player foundation.

The esports player foundation (EPF) was founded in Cologne in January 2020 and is the world’s first funding institution for e-sports on a non-profit basis. In the meantime, the EPF has supported more than 100 talents on their way into professional esports, according to the organization’s website.

It says the targeted support is intended to help e-sports talent “make the leap into the national elite.” Via its Twitter channel, the EPF has been calling on players from Schleswig-Holstein to apply and represent their state since yesterday.

The “holistic support” includes sports psychological counseling, media training, hardware equipment and nutritional advice, according to the website of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The food wholesaler Edeka Nord supports the state and the EPF as a “nutrition partner,” it adds.

Schleswig-Holstein as a pioneer

The state of Schleswig-Holstein has considered itself a “pioneer” within Germany in the field of e-sports for years. Not only has the Ministry of the Interior established the Schleswig-Holstein State Center for E-Sports and Digitization in Kiel, but it has also built up five regional e-sports centers. Schleswig-Holstein is thus providing “sustainable” support for the e-sports scene.

Kristina Herbst, the responsible state secretary at the Ministry of the Interior, comments:

We accompany and promote the development of e-sports in Schleswig-Holstein as a state government in order to be able to ensure important social-ethical framework conditions for us. With the previous state funding totaling 1.5 million euros for numerous e-sports projects, primarily broad-based sports structures have been created, from which performance-oriented e-sports can now grow.”

For its part, the EPF expresses its gratitude for the state’s commitment. As co-founder Jörg Adami explains, this gives young talents “a unique opportunity” to enjoy professional training and thus prepare for a career in professional e-sports. The organization therefore hopes that other German states will follow Schleswig-Holstein’s example.
