The expansion “Nova’s Secret Missions” is set after the events of StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void. After the downed threat of Amon, the Zerg’s ravenous appetite grows as they spread once again. Fear and discontent are spreading within the Terran civilian population, and because of this, a paramilitary group is forming that claims to be dedicated to protecting humans – the so-called “Defenders of Humanity.” In the midst of the turmoil, several Ghosts (specially trained psionic assassins) of the Terran League disappear, including Nova, who is considered the deadliest agent of this elite unit. She wakes up in an unknown research facility and doesn’t remember what happened in the last months. This is where “Nova’s Secret Missions” begins.
The sight cones should be better avoided by Nova in such a superior force. The first mission pack offers both hero missions with Nova only and missions with base building and additional troops.
The entire mission pack consists of nine missions that represent a new story-based single-player campaign and will be released in chunks. Three missions in each of three packages are scheduled for release by the end of 2016. Neither StarCraft 2 nor any of the expansions will be required. The Starter Edition is sufficient.
Story in a rush
The story, which builds on each other, is presented in cinematic cutscenes, but they don’t reach the quality we’re used to from the StarCraft 2 trilogy. The visuals are neatly staged and Nova in particular is excellently animated, but the settings, the secondary characters and the German voice output fall short of the familiar quality. On the other hand, the mission descriptions are more elaborate and better than in the predecessors, because this time they prepare better for the missions without giving everything away. As for the quality of the story, all we can say so far, i.e. after the prelude, is that the action is quite okay, everything seems kind of rushed and is on the same level as the StarCraft 2 trilogy, which in turn was not known for its great story, but rather for the elaborate staging and the great missions.
Starting with mission 2, Nova’s equipment and army may then be customized. Due to the early stage of the game, only a few options are available. For example, Nova can be given a shotgun instead of a sniper rifle, or her camouflage suit can be replaced with armor with jump jets.
A siege tank with jump jets can very easily reach elevated terrain.
The familiar troop types can also be given upgrades. Thus, the Avengers can henceforth lay spider mines, Space Marines can shoot further, or tanks can be equipped with jump jets. If you decide to equip tanks with jump jets, other units will no longer be able to access this improvement. So you have to choose – and siege tanks with jump jets are really great!
Great missions
While the story and staging are rather mid-range, the missions know how to please. In the first mission, you have to escape from a facility with light sneak elements and Commandos-like sight cones; emphasis on light “sneak elements”, because it’s not really bad when Nova is occasionally spotted and individual soldiers don’t sound the alarm when the person next to them suddenly drops dead after a “broken neck”. Instead, there is a very surprising arcade interlude at the end. In the second mission, you command additional Terran units besides Nova (including base building) and are allowed to stop the Zerg. In the third mission you have to conquer strategic positions on a map,
Also some old familiar characters like Matt Horner or Valerian Mengsk are included.
garrisons and then infiltrate a research facility. Each mission offers unique elements and always phases in which the action is intense, followed by pauses in the fighting, while in the third mission Zerg units rush towards the base almost permanently. The first mission lasted just under 20 minutes. The other two missions are through after half an hour each. Including the cutscenes and the troop adjustments, the first part of the mission package offers two to three hours of playtime – on the “Normal” difficulty level.
