Both finalists in GSL Code S, the prestigious “StarCraft 2” league in South Korea, had a chance to immortalize themselves in the history books at the final match on July 29, 2022: Seong-jo “Maru” Cho, the exceptional Terran and four-time GSL winner, had the opportunity to finally nab the legendary G5L trophy for the fifth win – it was his fourth attempt by now to complete the feat. Once again, however, his opponent proved stronger in the final.
End of a five-year drought
Joon-ho “herO“Kim beat “Maru” by a surprisingly clear 4-1 margin to become the first Protoss player to win the GSL Code S championship in over five years – an incredible drought for a faction in what is actually a very well-balanced real-time strategy game. Not only did “herO” end this long era of humiliation for Protoss, he immortalized himself in the annals of GSL as the first professional to not only return to the competition after being forced to take a break for his military service, but to actually win it. For him, the success also marks his first win in an individual tournament in just over five years.
The Protoss Messiah, as fans have come to call him reverently, unpacked some surprising strategies against “Maru,” to which the latter fell victim unprepared. And he resisted the Terran ironclad in prolonged games. “Maru” seemed to have had enough at some point and relied on a classic “all-in” strategy of his faction, the SCV pull.
In this case, workers are sent into battle along with the army in the hope of sheer overrun of the adversary by numerical superiority. The Protoss, however, was prepared for this and did not let himself be fooled. His aggressive style of play, which has earned him much praise and recognition in recent weeks and months, proved to be the key to weakening all enemy offensive efforts.
The newly crowned champion “herO” stated in the post-match interview that he plans to win a little more in the future – his wife, he said, should quietly get used to winning. The latter was eagerly cheering along among the spectators and experienced her husband’s triumph live for the first time. The couple can look forward to around 30,000 euros in prize money.
