StarCraft 2: DPG defends WTL title

For the first time in the history of WTL there is a successful title defense: Dragon Phoenix (DPG) has secured its second consecutive championship in its third consecutive final appearance. The top Chinese team thus collects its third trophy overall in the competition series and cements its reputation as the best “” team in the world.

Until the final, however, the final round of the WTL was the show of Team NV: The South Korean team announced that it would disband after the end of the – Season , so the appearance in the playoffs was the last hurrah of the successful team that won the championship in the summer of 2021. Having lost its star player Seong-ju “Maru” Cho before the – Season , NV did not rate its chances of a deep run in the finals as too high. However, the squad put in a strong team performance, which should have put the pros in good stead for open spots with other teams.

Hyun-woo “Creator” Jang did most of the work against Kwangdong Freecs and KaiZi Gaming, Jae-seon “Bunny” Lee manufactured PSISTORM Gaming practically single-handedly and contributed a lot to the victory over Alpha X and Soo-ho “DRG” Park proved himself against Shopify Rebellion as a critical prop. That strong run propelled Team NV into its third straight final, even without its superstar – and into DPG’s sights for the third time.

All the momentum NV had gathered behind them didn’t help against the giants of the game wearing the jersey of DPG, however: Byung-ryul “Rogue” Lee, Ryung-woo “Dark” Park and Joon-ho “herO” Kim disenchanted the underdog and defended their place on the WTL throne with an iron fist. Around 12,000 euros in prize await the defending champions as a reward.

The farewell tour of Team NV was not crowned with a final success, but it can be seen – and doubles as a proper application for the now team-less professionals.

Upheaval at DPG

Farewell is also a keyword at champions DPG: “Rogue” will soon start his military service and thus hang up mouse and keyboard, at least for the time being. After Seung-wook “Zest” Joo, who also disappeared towards the military, this is the second big departure for the champions this year. The decomposition of this monster team, it seems, can’t be done by any other opponent than time itself. Perhaps one of the recent final opponents will soon fill the gap.

The Chinese organizers of the WTL are now preparing for the winter – Season , which will first begin with a qualifying round: with Platinum Heroes and SSLT there are two relegated teams, while the place opened by Team NV’s dissolution is also up for grabs again.
