“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” goes out on a limb with Spock and Chapel’s friendship, ignoring the events of “Starship Enterprise.”
- Episode 5 of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” contradicts the official “Star Trek” canon!
- Chapel and Spock’s relationship looks very different in “Starship Enterprise,” which takes place seven years later.
- Will “Strange New Worlds” still establish these contradictions or were events deliberately ignored here?
In the fifth episode of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” on streaming service Paramount+, the previously existing “Star Trek” canon is ignored by establishing a friendship between Spock (Ethan Peck) and Sister Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) that no longer plays a role in “Starship Enterprise,” which is set seven years later in the “Star Trek” chronology.
From “Starship Enterprise,” all we get is that Nurse Chapel (then Majel Barrett) is rather unenthusiastic and has a crush on Spock (then Leonard Nimoy), but he confronts her with a typical Vulcan coldness. This corresponds only slightly to the dynamics we experienced in “Strange New Worlds”.
Chapel has so far come across as bright and overly enthusiastic, and is flirtatious with Spock, who is not cold to her, but friendly. He even punches a Vulcan who insults Chapel to defend her.
But this is not the only place where a discrepancy is found. In addition, in “Starship Enterprise” – Season 2, Chapel seems surprised and shocked when she learns that Spock has a fiancée, T’Pring (then Arlene Martel). In “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” however, she even gives Spock relationship advice and meets T’Pring (Gia Sandhu).
Fans, of course, find it surprising that the series rewrites events in such a way and creates logic gaps. Of course, there is still hope that “Strange New Worlds” will straighten this out in the coming weeks.
Thus, Spock could continue to flirt with Chapel, causing problems on the bridge, so Spock decides to stop the intimacy, which could explain Spock’s cold manner in “Starship Enterprise”. Also, Spock could temporarily break up with T’Pring, so that Chapel gets her hopes up, but later doesn’t realize that Spock and T’Pring are giving each other a second chance.
How the problem will be solved and if it will be solved, we will find out in the coming weeks or “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” – Season 2. We tell you how you can watch “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” in Germany and list all “Star Trek” new releases!
