Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard left the gaming world shaken. The deal could have a particularly strong impact on Sony.
Earlier this year, Microsoft announced its intention to acquire gaming giant Activision Blizzard. This multi-billion dollar acquisition has implications for the entire gaming industry. Sony in particular seems to have reservations about the mega-deal due to Call of Duty. After all, according to Microsoft gaming CEO Phil Spencer in a blog post on Thursday, the franchise will also be available in Xbox Game Pass.
With the announcement of the acquisition, concerns arose among many PlayStation fans that Call of Duty would only be exclusive to the Xbox in the future. These concerns also surfaced at Sony itself when the company was questioned about the deal by the Brazilian regulatory authority. For Sony, Call of Duty is an essential game, which significantly influences console sales. Phil Spencer’s blog post seems to fuel these concerns even further, and also appease them at the same time.
Microsoft plans to make Activision Blizzard’s beloved games, including Overwatch, Diablo and Call of Duty, available on Game Pass. The subscription system requires gamers:inside to pay a monthly amount and then have access to countless titles. In this way, Microsoft wants to enable players to have even easier access to most games.
Had good calls this week with leaders at Sony. I confirmed our intent to honor all existing agreements upon acquisition of Activision Blizzard and our desire to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation. Sony is an important part of our industry, and we value our relationship.

However, it could also mean that titles like Call of Duty end up being limited to Xbox only. Nevertheless, Spencer gives the all-clear here as well. Every Call of Duty game should also be released on the PlayStation at the same time. The CEO compares the title with Minecraft, since Mojang was taken over by Microsoft in 2014.
With Minecraft, Microsoft has apparently had a good experience in continuing to run it on multiple platforms. This is now also supposed to happen in the case of Call of Duty – just under different auspices. After all, Microsoft assured us shortly after the announcement of the mega-deal that the shooter will remain on the PlayStation consoles.
