Microsoft makes serious accusations – Sony to pay developers so games don’t end up in Game Pass
What happened? Negotiations are currently underway around Microsoft’s acquisition of “Call of Duty” publisher Activision Blizzard. Sony is panicking about Call of Duty after the billion-dollar deal, saying that the game series “no competition” and is so popular that it has “the console choice of users” could influence. Microsoft considers this claim to be “incoherent“, as one of Sony’s core strategies is to distribute exclusive titles for its own console.
“This once again shows a fear over an innovative business model that provides quality content at a low price for gamers and threatens a supremacy built over the years through device-dependent and exclusivity-focused strategy”, Microsoft says in the submitted document, accusing Sony of hindering the company’s growth.
“Microsoft’s ability to continue growing Game Pass has been obstructed by Sony’s desire to hinder that growth. Sony pays for ‘block rights’ to keep developers from providing content to Game Pass and other such subscription services.”
The entire document includes further rebuttals to Sony’s objections regarding the Activision Blizzard acquisition. What background Microsoft is using to make the claim that Sony is blocking games for Game Pass is unclear. No specific individual cases are referenced that could provide clues as to which developers Sony is said to have paid money to. Some parts of the document have been obscured, so one can only speculate whether Microsoft has more information up its sleeve.
Sony vs. Microsoft: Takeover of Activision Blizzard is still being negotiated
Here’s how it continues: The negotiations are far from over, and the new document again provides talking points about the nearly $70 billion deal. Sony’s response with the new PS Plus models is not going down so well with gamers*, so the PlayStation manufacturer’s worries are probably mounting. There will probably continue to be a back and forth between Sony and Microsoft. It remains to be seen in whose favor the responsible investigating authorities will decide. No trend can be seen here yet.
Sony is said to block games for Game Pass – Microsoft with heavy accusations
Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard is said to have implications for Game Pass, meaning the offering could become even more attractive in the future once the acquisition is complete. So Sony’s concerns about Game Pass and Call of Duty are justified – at least from a business perspective. But whether they can convince the authorities to side with them, the negotiations will have to show.
