Sony has announced the next acquisition. This time the Japanese company is snapping up a studio that will bring PlayStation games to mobile systems.
Sony is about to make its next acquisition of a studio. As the company announced on the PlayStation Blog, a “definitive agreement to acquire Savage Game Studios” has been reached.
With the new acquisition, Sony will not so much strengthen the PlayStation consoles. Rather, Savage Game Studios is a company that specializes in content for mobile devices.
With the pending takeover, Sony wants to strengthen a new strategy that includes publishing games on PC and mobile systems as well. Especially with releases of PlayStation titles on the PC, the Japanese could celebrate great successes lately.
“We are also proud of our planned releases for the PC, of which Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection and Marvel’s Spider-Man, for example, will give gamers without PlayStation hardware a taste of our fantastic collection of first-party titles,” said Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios.
New target groups to be reached
Sony’s activities on mobile devices are intended to be complementary in nature, providing more opportunities for more people to engage with PlayStation content. In addition, the company said it is striving to reach new audiences that are not yet familiar with PlayStation and the PlayStation games.
Savage Game joins the newly created Mobile Division, which will operate independently of console development. The goal is to create innovative experiences based on new and existing PlayStation IP, he said.
“I hope you will join me in welcoming Savage Game Studios to the company. And I hope those who enjoy mobile games in addition to console or PC games will look forward to what they have up their sleeves,” Hulst continued.
He added that the studio is already working on a “new, unannounced, premium action game with live service for mobile devices.” However, it is still too early for further information, he added.
Commitment to consoles will not be diminished
Hulst asserts that the efforts beyond consoles “in no way diminishes our commitment to the PlayStation community.” The same goes for the passion to continue developing “great single-player experiences with a compelling story.”
Also referenced by the PlayStation Studios head was PlayStation VR2, which is nearing release and will be early 2023 on the market will come. It is supposed to take off with games like “Horizon: Call of the Mountain”.
