Shadowbans in CoD: Activision’s Controversial Move

Many players are concerned and complain vehemently about Shadowbans in Warzone. A Warzone insider and expert “TheXclusiveAce” now reveals the mechanics behind the system.

Shadowban justified ?

Many players keep complaining about the amount of cheaters in : Warzone. One mechanic that aims to counter this is the Shadowban, which has been tightened up even further in the wake of the introduction of the RICHOCHET anti-cheat program, works independently and is based on the reporting system by players.

However, what actually had the purpose of thinning the ranks of cheaters becomes the undoing for many players of the shooter. Because the whole system does not seem to be particularly sophisticated. More and more players complain that they have fallen victim to the Shadowbans.

A Warzone insider now reveals the secret

For the warzone expert it is clear, the shadowbans are distributed far too easily. To change this, the reporting system and the verification of cases should be adjusted significantly. Another possibility for the expert, however, would be to completely remove the shadowban system from Call of Duty. After all, Activision introduced an anti-cheat with the Ricochet system, which no longer has to rely on player reports. Even though it is still not perfect, the Shadowban system will become obsolete. This decision would probably also bring relief to a lot of Call of Duty players.

This is what happens with a shadowban and this is how you get it

Unlike a normal ban in Call of Duty, the shadowban does not directly prevent you from continuing to play. Because when you log into the game, you don’t get a notification regarding the ban. However, the shadowban still has a big impact on the gameplay experience in Call of Duty. Because if you get a shadowban imposed on you, you will only be thrown into lobbies that are filled with other shadowban players. The waiting time until you get into a lobby can increase drastically and the ping in these lobbies is usually constantly above 200-350.

This of course extremely reduces the enjoyment of the game, because besides innocent players, these lobbies are filled with a mass of cheaters. Call of Duty thus becomes as good as unplayable, should you be affected by a shadowban. For the Warzone expert “TheXclusiveAce” is clear: “Bans are out of control in CoD”.. He goes into detail about the problem in a video (among others).

It seems like Call of Duty is just throwing its shadowbans around. Streamers are affected, but also normal players who want to enjoy a few rounds of combat in Warzone. Who gets a shadowban, however, is not decided by the developer or even Activision itself, but solely by the players, since the mechanic runs completely via the reporting system in Call of Duty.

Each player has the option to report an opponent to the developer for various things. If a player is reported for cheating more often, he gets a shadowban. A shadowban can last up to two weeks. During this time, the developers check whether the player is really using unauthorized software, hardware or other means to gain an unauthorized advantage.

This is why there are so many shadowbans

Anyone who has ever been affected by a shadowban in Call of Duty knows how frustrating this situation can be, especially if you are not aware of any fault. But unfortunately, many false positives occur because not every player is conscientious about the reporting feature. Often, players are already reported when opponents don’t like the way they play. Through the killcam in Warzone, users also get false information about a player. For example, the killcam may make it look like the player has no recoil and is using an aimbot, even though this is not true.

Streamers are reported in part because their opponents recognize the name tags. Some players then use reporting to show that they don’t like the streamer. And still other players simply can’t accept that there are players in Call of Duty who are significantly better than they are (which, by the way, is the most common reason for reporting).

TheXclusiveAce finds clear words: “It’s time to get rid of the shadowban system”.

For the warzone expert, it’s clear the shadowbans are distributed way too easily. To change this, the reporting system and the review of cases should be changed. Another possibility for the expert, however, would be to completely remove the shadowban system from Call of Duty. After all, Activision introduced an anti-cheat program with the Ricochet system, which no longer has to rely on player reports. Even if it is still not perfect, the Shadowban system will become obsolete. This decision would probably also bring relief to a lot of “Call of Duty” players.
