What is this scam?

As just reported by some users on Twitter they receive private messages from their friends’ accounts. According to them, perverted pictures or information about them are circulating. They are said to have sent nude pictures of themselves and are now being exposed on a public Discord in order to defame them. An invitation to the corresponding Discord is also attached. The contact in question then blocks you directly because it “doesn’t want anything to do with you.” Clicking on the link will take you to the server and you will be asked to authenticate, according to reports. However, you should not do that under any circumstances.

Verification steals your password, hacks your account

As one user reported, his account was stolen after authentication. Someone strange logged in to it, sent more scam messages, and then blocked people. So corresponding messages can definitely come from the accounts of friends and acquaintances and not only from strangers on a server. However, since the contact blocks you directly, you can’t at least ask him via Discord if the message is actually serious. Moreover, the links and the corresponding servers often differ, so you can’t just warn about a specific server. That is why this new scam is particularly dangerous.

How to protect yourself:

If you receive messages with a similar tone, do not click the link. Notify your friends outside of Discord. If you are affected, you should change your password as soon as possible and contact Discord support if necessary. A good option for secure passwords are password managers. This way you won’t forget them, which can easily lead to problems.
