Not Moist Esport, not FURIA – Team BDS is the answer to the question of who will be Rocket League World Champion-2022. 600,000 US dollars will go to the Swiss organization.
Around 200,000 viewers watched the final round of the Rocket League World Championship 2022 on Twitch, and several thousand were probably on site at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, USA. When the final play-offs started, all but one of the favorites were there – the wildcard qualifiers came away empty-handed.
It was a bit surprising that Team Falcons had to drop out shortly after the group stage. However, they were part of the hammer group with FaZe Clan, FURIA and G2 Esports. In the lower bracket the finalist of the Spring Split was eliminated – against Karmine Corp.
A landslide victory as a can opener
They then tried it first in the play-offs against Team BDS, but lost out in the decisive seventh game. Arrived in the semifinals, FURIA seemed to be a number too big. Already 2:0 behind, the Swiss organization burst into action in the third game. With a whopping 6:0 they started the race to catch up and won the following four games.
That visibly gave them a tailwind, because in the final they hardly gave G2 Esports a chance. Winning the first three games outright, their opponents came back, but their hopes were nipped in the bud in the fourth game. BDS can not only be happy about the trophy, but also about 600,000 US dollars
A special honor was still given to BDS players Evan ‘M0nkey M00n’ Rogez and Enzo ‘Seikoo’ Grondein. While Rogez became Defensive MVP, the organizers named Grondein Most Valuable Player of the entire World Cup
“one of the best and most difficult challenges”
For the organization, it’s also a validation, because: Grondein joined the team only four months ago, as did coach Théo ‘Mew’ Ponzoni. That this new composition succeeds and ‘Seikoo’ finds his way in his first year in the competition in such a way – for Ponzoni “certainly one of the best and most difficult challenges in my life.” To make this “new start, where there are no rules because the players don’t yet know how to play together” and to now be rewarded like this makes him “really happy.”
The fact that BDS kept his opponent at a distance in the final was mainly due to said upheaval, the coach explains: “After London (the Spring Split, Editor’s note.) we decided to play a style and master it, and ours is exactly the opposite of G2’s, because we put a lot of emphasis on structure and take our time, and I think G2 is a team that needs explosiveness in the game.”
Accordingly, you could see “G2 winning against FaZe, a team that is explosive and can jump from anywhere, but I think they have trouble dealing with you if you take too much time to respond to the aggressiveness,” ‘Mew’ concluded. For Team BDS, the world title is their first trophy since December 2021, when they won the Fall Split Major.
