Full voltage with the arcade speedster
Two passionate FIFA gamers curve through an arena in remote-controlled racing cars in order to get a ball into the goal. What sounds like a bad staircase joke turns out to be a briefly refreshing soccer substitute. Because Rocket League falls behind in terms of tactics, complexity and game structure, but despite the sometimes chaotic conditions it requires one thing: skills. Anyone who has completed the higher tutorials will have a hunch that it’s not done with clumsy chasing after the ball. On the one hand, the cars can jump and, via the double jump, also reach heights that turn every field player into a goalkeeper. Then you can give the bolides a boost and spin the little speedsters in the air.
Just before the ball you can perform a kind of full-span shot by pressing the X key twice.
A typical example: the corners are rounded in Rocket League, which is why you can hit dangerous goal crosses from midfield by racing towards the ball parallel to the board, as long as the opponents don’t know how to prevent this. Just before you get to the ball, you can execute a kind of full-span shot by pressing the X key twice. The ball then flies along the board in a high arc, comes up and bounces directly in front of the goal. The partner should then wait in the middle, must anticipate the right timing when to use the boost, when to jump up and whether you can use a forward flip to smash the ball into the goal with the rear of the vehicle. But how many times have you missed the ball, missed or gone underneath, jumped up too late to hold the ball, or positioned yourself poorly?
Small FIFA replacement with big network problems
It’s the same with the other sideways goal kicks, especially since the physics feel very authentic. In addition, you can tactically take opponents out of traffic for a short time via total pileups. Of course, there are lucky flipping goals and chaotic situations every now and then, but one thing is usually certain: the better team wins. And that’s what makes Rocket League a FIFA replacement on a sporting level. Not seriously. But just in between. Older gamers will remember the use of Blobby Volley at LAN parties. And exactly the same whim will

also ignited in Rocket League. The 2-against-2 and 3-against-3 games cause whooping screams, roaring laughter, jeering thigh knockers in the party room … if the connection works.
Why Sony? Why do these network problems keep happening? By now, there should be over twelve million Playstation Plus members. And as I mentioned at the beginning: I think it’s great that, especially with an online game like Rocket League, all of your friends own the game and you can immediately play together online. It couldn’t be warbling more beautifully from the PR rooftops: thousands of people talking about the “insane” online experience in schoolyards and workplaces. Gamers associating that very experience with Playstation Plus and yes please: many, many more online games for free! But then after a Driveclub fiasco, please with a new server farm and a special unit that does nothing but ensure that this online experience runs smoothly. Time and time again, we couldn’t get onto the servers, the servers weren’t even accessible, or we were plagued by short-lived disconnections from fellow players. And it doesn’t take a genius to be able to predict the rush with twelve million members. Sony earns over 50 million euros a month with its paid online service. Once again: 50 million euros! And no: don’t blame it on Psyonix, please. If you provide a whole Rocket League area at the E3 booth to make exactly that Plus program seem more attractive, you should also actively support it. After all, Rocket League is not a game that you play for hours at a time, but rather just turn on quickly. And then it simply has to run.
