Last week the RLCS Spring Major 2022 took place in London. Moist Esport secures the Win against Team Falcons. Swiss organization and tournament favorite BDS says goodbye already in the second round.
The Spring Major is already delivering unexpected results from Day 1. Team BDS is considered the favorite, is the No. 1 seed of Europe and won the Fall Major. All of this comes to nothing. In the first game, Team Secret (South America) knocks them out of the Upper Bracket. In the second game, the team from Oceania, Pioneers, knocks the favorites out of the tournament altogether. The small regions show that they are hungry and the skill difference between the small and big regions is not very big.
We are out of the #RLCS Spring Major. We now have one month to prepare ourselves and come back at our best level for the World Championship.#BDSPOWER #RLCS
– Team BDS (@TeamBDS) June 30, 2022
BDS wasn’t the only favorite to come under pressure, however. G2 Esports, winners of the Winter Major, are defeated 2-3 by Karmine Corp in a best-of-five full-length series after taking a 2-0 lead. Then in the Lower Bracket, the same thing happens to G2 Esports again. They lose 2-3 against Team Liquid and get kicked out of the Major. Moist Esports and FaZe Clan also lose their first match early. At the end of the first day the top 4 seeds were already in the lower bracket.
EU / NA Rest of the World?
In the competitive scene, the two larger regions dominated for a long time. The first additional region to be integrated into the RLCS was Oceania in – Season 3, and after a few – Season s, a team from Oceania was able to achieve the best ranking so far in 2018. Team Chiefs made it to the top 4 at the – Season 6 World Championship, which was the best result ever achieved by a smaller region until the RLCS Spring Major 2022.
No one expected a team from a smaller region to finish at the top at the Spring Major. And then it all turns out differently. Team Falcon from the Middle East and North Africa region made it to the finals and made it anything but easy for Team Moist. Nevertheless, at the end of the day the team from Europe prevails and wins the Major in London.
What does this mean for the World Championship
On August 4, the Rocket League World Championship will kick off. After this turbulent major, I don’t think anyone knows exactly what to expect there. One thing is certain: the small regions are a lot more dangerous than expected.
