Riot’s FPS Valorant has only been out for a few months, but there are already numerous rumors about possible new agents. Now the developer has brought some of its plans to light.
Since the release of Valorant, numerous questions about Riots FPS have been circulating on the Internet. One of the most asked is: how many agents will there be in the coming years? Currently, there are 12 different characters to choose from, but even though we haven’t even gotten past Episode 1, a new agent could be released as early as next month.
Anyone familiar with League of Legends knows that the release of new characters is a special event. The same could now happen with Valorant. Riot’s Ryan “Morello” Scott already announced that each new agent will be special and should turn the existing meta upside down. In a Reddit post, Riot employee “Pwyff” hinted at some numbers:
“The perfect agent roster balance…. I think Morello said at least ~50? 60? I think we’re starting to understand how flexible the agent roster is the more new agents we add. So I don’t think we can say “100 is crazy” or “100 is great”. I personally think ~50-60 feels right. (Say 5 per role).”
Pwyff goes on to say that Dota 2 is a good comparison. There, every unit is unique, but in high-end gaming it is important to find the perfect combination and that weaker agents can be strong in every situation when combined correctly.
That Riot employee Pwyff sees Dota 2 instead of LoL as a reference is of course extremely interesting. Does Riot see Valve’s MOBA as having a better mix in its champion pool? However this is to be interpreted, the fact should be that some agents are planned for Valorant in the future. Considering that with a current selection of 12 agents, a total of 60 are targeted, this could be a few years away.
Twelve Valorant agents are pretty few in a skill-based FPS. By comparison, Blizzard’s Overwatch launched with 21 heroes and now has a total of 32. Riot will definitely try to release new agents at a high frequency. Big advantage would be that a larger agent selection would mean more possibilities of team combinations. In the pro scene, Cypher is currently considered a must-pick. Although Riot Games indicated that a ban system is not planned, this could become almost inevitable as the number of agents increases.
