Riot Games has announced it is changing the rules for transfers in League of Legends. This is because the top European team G2 smuggled a strange clause into the contract for the transfer of their player Perkz, which threw a wrench into the rival Fnatic.
That’s what prompted the rule change:
- The US site Dotesports got hold of the documents for the sale of Perkz from G2 to Cloud 9 and discovered an interesting clause there in the “buyout” agreement.
- As an additional agreement with the switch, the contract stated that Cloud 9 was not allowed to sell the player to Fnatic for 3 years. This is G2’s archrival: Fnatic and G2 have fought out the championship in Europe between themselves for years. G2 poached Fnatic’s best player, Midlaner Caps, in 2019.
- When Fnatic found out about the clause, they filed an official complaint. It was then forwarded to higher authorities, as Dotesports knows. The result is now a change in the rule.

“Not compatible with the values and ideals of our sport”.
This is the response from Riot Games: Tom Martell, the head of e-sports at Riot Games, has issued an official statement via Twitter.
The statement said that a clause affecting future transfers was an innovation that had not previously appeared in the rules of professional League of Legends. G2 and Cloud 9 would therefore not be penalized.
However, G2, Fnatic and Cloud 9 had been told that Riot would not participate in the implementation of this rule. They would accept Perkz moving to any team that submits the necessary paperwork. That would be up to the teams in question.
In the future, however, Riot will prevent such agreements. They are not compatible with the interests and values of the sport. One will update its rule accordingly.
He’s a bit of the villain of LoL: Ocelote, the boss of G2.
“I’m not so easily tricked, bitch”.
So says the mastermind of G2: Ocelote, the team leader of G2, is apparently behind the clause. He says on Twitter: “The clause was a safeguard so that Cloud 9 wouldn’t buy Perkz and sell him to Fnatic on the same day. Such a rule is “standard and within the rules”.
How is this discussed? The rivalry between G2 and Fnatic is well known. And the head of G2, Carlos “Ocelote” Rodrigeuz, is known for always adding fuel to the fire and stoking the tension.
For example, G2 has already poached two star players from Fnatic, Caps and Rekkles.
Anyway, Ocelote always feels unfairly criticized: When he sells players to the U.S., he says, it’s a huge deal and he gets insulted. When other teams sell their star players to the U.S., no one cares, he says, for example.
On Twitter, the word is now:
- Ocelote is now finally playing the LoL super villain.
- A fan of Fnatic is furious about the decision and demands a punishment.
- Ocelote himself says: He thinks Riot Games’ decision is totally right.
- And the concerned player Perkz says: Esports offers better drama than Mexican soap operas.
So where does Perkz go from here? It looks like Perkz will indeed be coming back to Europe, but not to Fnatic.
A new super team is reportedly forming in LoL – Bring back 2 of Europe’s best players.
