- The hostage “hoax” at Ubisoft last November is believed to be the work of a Rainbow Six cheater
- He himself claims he has nothing to do with the current incidents
In November of last year, a large-scale police operation took place at Ubisoft Montreal. The latter had been informed by a caller that a hostage situation was taking place there. After the armed police officers arrived at the offices of Ubisoft, it quickly became clear that it must be a hoax call.
According to a new report from Canadian newspaper La Presse, this tasteless hoax was the work of a notorious Rainbow Six cheater. The fact that several dozen Ubisoft employees barricaded themselves on the roof to seek safety from the announced hostage-taker is said to have been the brainchild of French citizen Yanni Ouahioune.
The latter is already known to Ubisoft as “Yannox keyboard” or “Y4nn0XX”, as he has been banned over 80 times in Rainbow Six Siege under these names.
The major operation was triggered by a prank phone call in which the caller claimed that five men had taken about 40 Ubisoft employees hostage and that they would “blow everything up” if the ransom demand of two million dollars was not met. After the employees were safely escorted out of the building, police continued to investigate the scene.
According to La Presse, after this action, the next hoax call continued immediately in December. There, a person claimed to have planted a bomb in the offices of Ubisoft Montreal – and very close to a daycare center. Really macabre. In January, it was claimed that a senior Ubisoft employee had been shot in another hostage incident.
In an effort to avoid a huge police presence over a phone troll, police conducted checks related to the last two calls in a more discreet manner.
Ouahioune has since reportedly admitted to being involved in a swatting incident four years ago. However, the Frenchman wants nothing to do with the current acts. At the same time, Ouahioune has to justify himself for having set up a fake Ubisoft website in order to steal data from other Rainbow Six Victories players.
The Rainbow Six cheater continues to insist in the Canadian newspaper that he is innocent: “I didn’t do anything. I only cheated in their video games. The only time I called Ubisoft was to insult them because they let me [aus dem Rainbow Six-Spiel] banned”.
Police are currently working to identify and arrest one or more suspects. At least for now it remains tasteless prank calls that cost time and nerves, but not lives. Things got more dangerous last week in Shanghai. Here, an attacker tried to kill the founders of Genshin Impact developer miHoYo with a knife.
