Although there has been no official release date so far, Blizzard continues to push back the release of Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. This emerges from the current financial report of Activision-Blizzard, which talks about a later launch of both games.
While still planning to release a large amount of content from Blizzard next year, we are now assuming a later release of Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 than originally planned.
Activision-Blizzard Financial Presentation
Meanwhile, the presentation does not mention a date or time frame. However, it does indicate that both Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 are unlikely to be released in 2022. Instead, we can assume 2023 or even later.
Why are Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 being delayed?
According to Activision-Blizzard, the development of both games in recent months made a big step towards completion
. So why the postponement then? Here, the financial report states that especially the post-launch support of Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 should benefit from a longer development time.
The publisher does not go into further detail at this point. Blizzard President Mike Ybarra provided another reason in the subsequent conference call with investors: The change in leadership within both teams is delaying development:
There’s obviously been a change in leadership. So we’ve looked at what we have left over in the final stages of production with fresh eyes and realized that we should give the teams more time to both deliver a great experience at launch and make sure that everything is in place to keep the community engaged for many years to come.
Mike Ybarra according to PC Gamer
Diablo 4 saw both game director Luis Barriga and lead designer Jesse McCree leave the team in August 2021.
In the case of Overwatch 2, there was even a double change of leadership within a few months. In April, Jeff Kaplan left after 19 years at Blizzard and appointed Aaron Keller as his successor as game director. A few weeks later, Chako Sonny, who had been the executive producer for Overwatch 2 until then, followed.

What’s next for Blizzard?
Even if it is not explicitly clear from the presentation and the conference call, the scandal surrounding Activision-Blizzard probably played a big role in the decision. Over the past few months, numerous employees have been repeatedly fired due to serious allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination. You can find a summary of the events here:

In addition, Blizzard only cancelled its own in-house exhibition Blizzcon for 2022 at the end of October and announced big changes for the future. In a video, GameStar editor-in-chief Heiko, MeinMMO editor-in-chief Leya and Blizzard expert Maurice took a closer look at the situation around Blizzard:
Will the Blizzard shock finally change anything?
The postponement of Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 is probably not too much of a surprise under the circumstances. In the case of Diablo, there is at least a small consolation with the recently launched closed beta for Diablo Immortal. And in the case of Overwatch 2, at least the upcoming Overwatch League – Season will be played on an early build of the new Competitive Multiplayer mode.
