Chul Kyung’s quiet lethality in the field allows him to rely on his Electronic Rendering Cloak (ERT-7) while remaining undetected. The ERT-7 uses diminished reality technology to filter perceptual stimuli from its immediate surroundings. Vigil carries a prototype in his backpack that scans nearby electronic devices and removes its image from any cameras in view.

BACKGROUND

“Don’t worry about me. I’ve never been here.”

Hardly any reliable data exist about Hwa’s early childhood. It is still unknown who his biological parents are. However, records show that his older brother and father were killed trying to flee to South Korea. School records exist from late puberty when he was adopted by the Hwa family. There is evidence of early trauma in early accounts – he was withdrawn, read slowly – but his later grades show marked improvement and focus.

Electronics and electrical engineering had a magical attraction for Hwa. Wanting to put his talent to practical use and serve his country, he enlisted in the South Korean Navy. He later earned a spot with the UDT/SEALs South Korea where he specialized in radar systems and stealth technology. After being recruited by the well-respected 707th Special Operations Battalion for unconventional combat missions, he proved fast and deadly. Hwa served alongside Specialist Grace “Dokkaebi” Nam until they were recruited together by Rainbow.

PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT

Specialist Chul Kyung “Vigil” Hwa had a turbulent childhood. He can’t remember much, and the memories he has are sacred to him. I assured him that it’s not my job to criticize his past or bring up things that would upset him, and that of course I’m always available if he or any of our Operators needs me. I explained that it is my job to form a cohesive team – everyone has their strengths and it is up to me to create a coherent whole from the individual people.
Maintaining anonymity is the driving force behind everything Hwa does. He’s uncomfortable that I’m recording our conversations and a notification on my phone showed the time of our appointment. He is equally anxious when it comes to social interactions. It’s hard to tell if he has a strong self-image or completely lacks one. However, it is obvious that Hwa does not manage to let anyone get close to him, which is why he is often alone with his thoughts.

I wanted to give him a clear picture of himself in my office at that moment. So that he doesn’t just see himself as an elite operator or a little boy who lost his family. I guess he didn’t understand what I was getting at when I asked him if he liked Saturday morning cartoons.

We casually went through a range of likes and dislikes, from quiet contemplation to free association. He felt uncomfortable but played along. As he relaxed, some of his own answers surprised him. After we talked about breakfast cereal and he realized he couldn’t ride a bike, he managed to share a memory with me. He described how the smell of hot soup brought to mind a vivid image of a woman smiling at him and handing him a bowl. He mistook her for his mother. His face softened and for a moment he was home.

I encouraged Hwa to incorporate these associative exercises into his everyday life. I know that various Rainbow members have tried to reach out to him, and while there are signs that he respects them, he may not be ready to let go of his last inner barriers just yet.
