BACKGROUND

Nizan’s father was a highly respected stonemason and his mother held various jobs throughout her life. Both sharpened his sense of architecture, design and precision and helped him excel at school. In addition to his intellectual interests, Nizan also excelled in sporting activities from an early age, including track and field, fencing and cycling. He later left university early to cross France by bicycle. Upon his return, he joined the gendarmerie. Nizan thrived in training. His prime disciplines include weaponry, surveillance and criminal investigations. Due to his pronounced adaptability, he was among the best in his year in the military and defense courses, which quickly attracted the attention of the GIGN. According to our psychologists, his first operations with this unit brought together all the elements necessary to satisfy his almost insatiable urge for challenge and adventure. Nizan specializes in hostage rescue and surveillance. He can look back on a long list of successful missions.

PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT

Reviewing Specialist Julien “Rook” Nizan’s record, one immediately notices his amazing ability to adapt to the demands of the moment. During our conversation, it quickly became clear that he was interested in many different topics. According to him, his parents seem to have given him this extremely versatile interest in the cradle. Julien and his sister Élodie were always encouraged to be curious about everything. It is reasonable to assume that this openness to the world led to the development of its protective – yet highly flexible – armor.

Nizan’s father’s job as a stonemason requires imagination, precision and dedication. His mother’s talent for enthusiastically devoting herself to various professions – accountant, street performer, florist, tourist guide, sommelier and cook – has had a strong influence on Nizan and taught him to face challenges and set his own goals. The operational reports testify to his almost chameleon-like ability to adapt to any required role with ease. This form of versatility is extremely rare. I’ve urged our senior staff, including Special Operations Officers Gustave “Doc” Kateb and Miles “Castle” Campbell, to push Nizan harder during operations.

I’d like to know what brought Nizan from his architecture studies to law enforcement. As a teenager and young adult, his passions were cycling, car racing and rock concerts, and he spent a great deal of time trying to figure out how to start a career in any of these fields. Then his interests developed in a different direction. It was when he left university to cycle across France that he experienced what freedom really means for the first time. When he returned, his horizons expanded more and more. At the time, the gendarmerie had just hired his father as a civilian for a covert anti-corruption operation affecting local businesses. Nizan told me that he was fascinated by how precisely the police proceeded with their planning.

He recalls being passionate about the breadth of skills and knowledge required for law enforcement and the military from the very beginning. Every day is different. Nizan is one of the most consistent optimists on the team. He has the important ability to motivate other Special Ops Forces and is very popular with everyone. However, I would prefer if Nizan’s sense of adventure was better utilized. Complacency never helped anyone.
