BACKGROUND

Touré began his career in law enforcement – as a uniformed police officer with the Gendarmerie Nationale. Thanks to his imposing figure, he was always deployed where a strong police presence was essential. He eventually earned a position with the Gendarmerie Mobile, whose focus is on controlling large crowds as well as military patrol operations and anti-terrorist missions. Thanks to his almost dogged training, Touré continued to hone his broad skills, which ultimately landed him a position with the GIGN. Although his strengths clearly lie in breakthrough techniques, he was also trained as a combat engineer and reconnaissance officer. When Touré is not on assignment for Rainbow, he works as an instructor for the GIGN.

PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT

Special Operations Officer Gilles “Montagne” Touré’s imposing stature and penetrating gaze are truly impressive. I can well imagine the unsettling effect he must have on his counterpart. He is not a man of many words, even in the company of friends. I decided to visit him in one of the GIGN training centers to make the conversation more pleasant for him.This also allowed me to observe Touré training with his trainees and get a more complete picture of him. At all times during my stay, he showed himself to be open-minded, fair, and even sociable.

We first talked about his role as a trainer. Touré expressed his excitement that Rainbow is constantly evolving and is proud to be a part of it. He told me that he always learns a lot from his comrades and has recently started to move outside his comfort zone more. It’s definitely due to his dedication that we’re increasing our use of virtual simulations in our training. He hopes to incorporate the unique skills of some operators, such as Special Operations Force Grace “Dokkaebi” Nam, into his upcoming training sessions.

Touré is a born protector. His decision to become a police officer speaks to that fact even more than the military tradition in his family. Touré has three siblings – his other two older brothers are also in the military. He said they were all raised by the family to be protectors. His parents told the children about numerous ancestors who fought for law and order. He believes that education is the solution to many of our world’s problems. His sister completed her training as a police officer, but then decided to become a teacher. She is convinced that she can achieve the most in this position.

Because Touré has great self-confidence but is more of an introvert, I was surprised to hear of his doubts regarding his role at Rainbow. Many of our operators are exceptionally gifted with language. This is not true of Touré. While no report mentions that this is a problem, even a weakness that is only self-perceived can ultimately prove to be a hindrance. That’s why I encouraged him to pick one – a single – language and learn it diligently. I’ve asked some of our special operations people to include him in their conversations. If all goes according to plan, this shouldn’t feel like a test to him, but rather an honest effort to better integrate him into the group.
