BACKGROUND

“Enlightenment is the only effective remedy against ignorance.”

Born in the small town of Louwsburg near the Ithala Game Reserve, Ndlovu spent many years exploring with her friend Elna Gardiner. As they grew, so did their appreciation and sense of responsibility for the animals on the reserve. The threat of poachers spurred them on, and while they struggled, they focused on the lives they could save rather than past losses holding them back.

Ndlovu joined the South African National Defense Force to expand her skills and fund her field ranger training. Her determination and dedication soon drew the attention of the 1 Parachute Battalion until she was badly wounded in an ambush in the Central African Republic.

When Gardiner, who had since become a successful veterinarian, asked her to help defend Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, she resigned from the military and began training local women in tracking, countering and surveillance techniques . Together they form the core of the “Inkaba Task Force” anti-poaching unit.

PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT

Specialist Thandiwe “Melusi” Ndlovu strikes me as someone best suited to advancing South Africa’s ongoing conservation efforts – she’s efficient, precise, and understands that greed is one of humanity’s greatest challenges. When I asked her if she thought we could ever overcome her, she said, “It’s good to have dreams, doctor.”

Her relationship with Elna began when they found out that their names have the same meaning: “beloved”. It wasn’t always an easy friendship, but they shared a love for the animals of the game reserve and an urge to explore places where they had absolutely no business being, which helped them overcome many challenges.Ndlovu’s stoic comparison of wounded on the battlefield with the screams of poisoned elephants is in stark contrast to Elna’s sympathy. It’s interesting to see how one focuses on prevention and the other on triage. In the end, their different approaches led to a partnership in which both parts complement each other.

Ndlovu refuses to talk about the ambush that destroyed her unit. It is clear from the reports that the operation was a horrific ordeal that she was only fortunate to survive. Suspecting latent survivor’s guilt syndrome, I tried to raise the issue, but she balked at every attempt. The tragedies she witnessed on the reservation seem to bother her more – she compares land mines to animal traps and thinks of the reservation as a war zone in her mind. Her profile suggests that any negative emotion has been translated into action, for example through the training of the women in her anti-poaching unit or the drone-based surveillance network she organized to oversee her operations.

She talks enthusiastically about her work. Ndlovu firmly believes that simply fighting poachers is not enough. It is just as important to educate the population and share responsibility. She takes great pride in the achievements of the women under her command and their contribution to the welfare of the animals they protect. She’s also interested in improving the local economy, but more importantly, empowering people to have what she calls “a self-determined future” — which she believes is the best way to counteract the lure of a quick buck .
