BACKGROUND

Monika Weiss’ mother is a respected mathematician and her father an inventor. Their high academic standards have always encouraged Weiss and her siblings to strive for and win numerous awards in math, science and music throughout their school careers. As part of a grant for gifted students, Weiss completed her first internship at a local technology company at age 16. She was then invited to MIT, where she focused on electrical engineering and received numerous awards for her research in microelectronics. Weiss then went to CalTech for her advanced studies in experimental electrical engineering. Weiss returned to Germany to continue research in military engineering before joining the Federal Police (BPOL) as an officer. Weiss was tailor-made for the physical and mental challenges of her job and went on to have a stellar career. After two years with the BPOL, she was recruited by GSG 9.

PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT

Special Operations Officer Monika “IQ” Weiss is extremely active, both physically and intellectually. When she’s not busy climbing, spelunking and taking on, well, countless other athletic and intellectual challenges, she writes science fiction novels. During our meeting, Weiss exuded such natural vitality that I was almost reminded of my runner’s high during my first marathon.

Weiss told me that she and her siblings were typical overachievers. Amused, she added that family reunions were extremely stressful even for her. But it quickly becomes clear that her family is very important to her. She confided in me that she doesn’t have close friends because only her family is able to understand her.

It’s not uncommon for people with exceptionally high intelligence to feel uncomfortable at social occasions. Of course, I don’t want to make Weiss make friends – that’s not my job, and it’s not hers. But I think it would do her good to get involved with some of our special operations people beyond the normal training sessions and research.

Her parents always encouraged Weiss and her siblings to hone their imaginations as much as their intellects. She describes her mother as “driven by the notion of discovering patterns in chaos.” Her father was the type of person to launch experimental rockets from the family garage roof. It’s hardly surprising that Weiss inherited her combined talent for deliberately inducing disruption.

Weiss was courted by companies and universities around the world, but ultimately decided to pursue a career in law enforcement. I was intrigued by that. She said it offered the perfect opportunity to work with state-of-the-art equipment while expressing a love for her home country. But I would like to add a third reason: Academic research can be quite satisfying, but it is usually quite restrictive and offers little freedom for the wild, creative approach that our special operations demand and that seems to be in Weiss’ blood.

According to mission reports, Weiss can display an almost obsessive attitude when facing challenges. At the same time, she repeatedly suffers from prolonged periods of insomnia. I suspect the latter is because she simply doesn’t want to accept that “there are only 24 hours in a day. If we are to further enhance her value to Rainbow, it would be of utmost importance that she learns when and where to relax.
