BACKGROUND

“You have to work for the things in life that make you happy. For me, that means stealing from the rich and corrupt.”

While caring for his mother, whose health was slowly deteriorating, Lucero found that neither government service nor the military academy fulfilled him. Instead, he discovered burglary and theft as a profession and found his purpose in robbing powerful criminals and distributing the loot to the poor. Lucero’s area of operation was the Flores neighborhood of Buenos Aires, and as his fame grew, he became known as “the man from Flores.”

When his identity was revealed and he was forced to flee, Specialist Eliza “Ash” Cohen offered him asylum in the United States. In return, he provided evidence against the most ruthless crime bosses of Buenos Aires. In his new life in Los Angeles, Lucero opened his own food truck, which he used as a base for his coups for five years. When Cohen learned of his activities, she took him on as an equal on her team, also offering him a secure future in which to raise a family.

PSYCHOLOGICAL EXPERTISE

Due to his stubbornness and perfectionism, specialist Santiago “Flores” Lucero finds it difficult to separate his personal and professional lives. He enjoys soothing the nerves of others and often cracks jokes, but he often gets in his own way by over-analyzing everyday situations.

I understand his need to be prepared for anything, considering that his mother was killed in retaliation for his activities in Buenos Aires. He must realize that he is in good hands here. I’m sure he will open up more over time by interacting with others, especially Specialist Eliza “Ash” Cohen, with whom he is already familiar.

As a team bonding exercise, I asked Santiago to cook his favorite Argentine dishes for all of us, which made it easier to address deeper issues. I learned that despite his charm, he is not afraid to speak openly about social issues and his commitment to impoverished communities. He also confessed that his marriage surprised him as much as it did me. Perhaps in time we will find out why his husband doesn’t mind his criminal career.

We also touched on how his childhood shaped who he is today. While he follows the traditional notion of “macismo,” he was also quick to point out that his mother taught him to think for himself. He has no memory of his father or his father’s political activities, but he is fond of talking about how proud his mother was of him for doing what he thought was right, regardless of the consequences.

I am glad that Santiago takes the time to observe the methods of others in order to improve his own. He learned a lot at the Colegio Militar in El Palomar, and I am sure that his years of criminal activity were also helpful. But I also believe that his growing friendship with special operations food and technology officers Grace “Dokkaebi” Nam and Tori “Gridlock” Fairous will prove extremely beneficial.
