BACKGROUND

Nam’s mathematical and technological skills secured her a National Academic Excellence Scholarship at KAIST (Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology). She served in the South Korean Army, where she was assigned to the Army’s 5163rd Division due to her adeptness with technology. Looking for an escape from office life, Nam secured a spot in the 9th Special Forces Brigade, also known as the Ghost Corps. There she was trained in mountaineering, survival techniques and guerrilla warfare. Nam is extremely adaptable and often finds creative and unorthodox ways to achieve her goal. This was also noticed by the US Forces in South Korea (USFK) and the 707th Special Battalion. Nam was encouraged to focus on breaching security measures and exploiting vulnerabilities in networks, and was summarily inducted into the 707th, where she served alongside Specialist Chul Kyung Hwa, codenamed “Vigil”, until both were recruited by Rainbow. Nam works in the research and development lab on new countermeasure technologies in close consultation with Specialist Masaru “Echo”.

According to recent reports, she is taking on too much and her overconfidence is causing concern for the team. Nam is a talented operator. However, one should not forget that she is one of the younger Rainbow recruits and has little combat experience. This job is demanding and the stakes are high. Some days I get the impression that she would rather sit behind her computer and control things from there, where nobody can harm her. But she wants to get better, to change. And to do that, she has to challenge herself.

I’m sure the reason for the overconfidence is fear. She is afraid of not belonging, of not being good enough. In previous disciplinary matters, the imperfections lay with the commanders, not Nam. A talented hacker not only understands code, but is a creative thinker who sees connections where the rest of us don’t. Yes, she is reckless. Yes, she also shows off sometimes. But regardless of what else people may see in her, they have to admit that there is a method to Nam’s madness.

When I asked her about her childhood, she boasted about schoolyard fights and described the extreme pressure she was under to perform. The school pressured parents by publicly comparing their children to each other. All her life she has had to live up to expectations. So tensions arise when she’s punished by Specialist Chul Kyung “Vigil” Hwa, and Nam has to deal with those tensions.

She said her grandparents introduced her to Buddhism when she was a child, and recently she has been visiting a temple again. That calms me. This is their way of purifying their mind and soul. Her quest for inner balance will allow Nam to reach her full potential. Her boasts might be unnerving to Operators like Specialist Yumiko “Hibana” Imagawa, but let’s give Nam that liberty.
