BACKGROUND

Kateb is of Algerian-French descent and grew up in a wealthy family in Paris’ 16th arrondissement. Many of his ancestors were highly respected military or medical professionals. In his second year as a medical student at the prestigious Université Paris Descartes, Kateb responded to a call from Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières – MSF) to volunteer. As a result, he has taken part in numerous emergency response and relief missions on the front lines worldwide. After graduating, Kateb turned down an offer from a prestigious private practice and opted for a career in the French Army Medical Service. His areas of expertise include toxicology and ecotoxicology. He has authored various scientific papers on biological agents and their impact on vulnerable populations and environments, as well as reports for the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Since Kateb is aware of the constant need for doctors, he continues to volunteer for MSF missions to this day. He is now a highly respected medical officer at the Commandement des forces spéciales terrestres.

PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT

Coming from a wealthy background, Specialist Gustave “Doc” Kateb could have easily become a self-absorbed narcissist, but he’s one of the most open-minded and considerate people I’ve ever met. Surprisingly, he didn’t initially show much interest in becoming a doctor. The drive seems to come more from a family tradition. However, his grandfather’s military service seems to have been a great motivation for him. Kateb has admitted that by the end of the sophomore semester he almost gave up as he felt no passion for his work. I assume that his father found the term “passion” in this context to be completely absurd.
In his second year, Kateb volunteered with MSF and his first mission left a deep impression to this day. All the misery, the chronic lack of supplies, the desperate need. He remembers the worried look on the mothers’ faces easing as they gathered near the tents. That was the moment when his passion for the profession was sparked. Meeting people who had so little made Kateb feel ashamed. It is interesting that the way he continued to live became increasingly uncomfortable for him.

Although the operational reports highlight Kateb’s selfless acts, he has clearly chosen a role as a combatant. That piqued my interest. It took quite a long time before he was willing to tell me his story. During a front-line operation in East Africa, the hospital where Kateb worked was stormed by the local militia. All the patients he had fought so hard to keep were killed. This dreadful event made him realize that he had the power to save lives—either with a scalpel or a bullet.

Kateb is a born conflict solver. It’s just one of many skills that make him a true asset to Rainbow. It’s clear that the team trusts him and has great respect for him. He has developed a strong bond with Specialist Emmanuelle “Twitch” Pichon, in no small part due to Pichon’s ability to mitigate threats to human life through the use of technology. Unfortunately, hostilities between him and Specialist Olivier “Lion” Flament have not yet been settled. The conflict grew out of quarantine measures, which resulted in the deaths of several of Kateb’s friends who helped him with the relief efforts. The situation seems stable for now, maybe even permanent. That’s maybe for the best
