BACKGROUND

“Not every child can choose what they become”.

Pereira was born the seventh of ten children to a widowed mother in a small town in the state of São Paulo. After moving to Rio de Janeiro at a young age, Pereira was arrested for robbery and given the choice of either being sentenced to juvenile detention or working as an informant for the Polícia Militar. Many years as an undercover officer in Brazil’s notorious gangs made her an expert in interrogation and surveillance, and today Pereira is regularly used as a trainer by the police. She is exceptionally good at tactical maneuvers in confined spaces and evacuations, and always behaves in an exemplary manner in extremely risky situations. After her actions during the security crisis in Rio de Janeiro, Pereira came to Rainbow’s attention, despite several reports that she is a dangerous and indomitable person. Outside of her professional career, little is known about Pereira’s life, except that she enjoys learning different languages and participating in unofficial jiu-jitsu tournaments.

Specialist Taina “Caveira” Pereira could be described as fearless and intelligent, considering the numerous reports of her daring at work, rash actions and assertiveness. But while her accomplishments have not gone unnoticed, her rebellious nature has not earned her praise. When we first met, I expected – who did I expect?

The beginning of her military career as an informant tells me that she is a survivor. In this context, it made more sense to ask her why she continued after her conviction. She replied that what was once her outlet has become a way of life. She continues to be defiant and resist the system. But although she likes to poke fun at her “superhero sense of justice,” it’s clear that she takes her job seriously.

People who don’t understand the dynamics of extended families – especially with so many brothers – often complain about Pereira’s uncouth behavior. Although Pereira was close to her siblings, she had to fight to be heard or even noticed. It is understandable that she values her privacy and is very eager to get her way. At the same time, thanks to family dynamics, noise and spontaneity are not a problem for her, and she understands the intricacies of group dynamics much better than others her age. That’s one of the reasons she’s such an excellent interrogator. I don’t want to imagine, though, how the road might have helped sharpen that skill.

Pereira has made it clear that we will not talk about her private life. The way she played with her necklace, I think she wanted to protect someone close to her, and it was not her intention to stop me.

So who was I expecting when I encountered Specialist Pereira? She defies expectation and assessment. I do not want this to be taken as an ominous warning. Just the opposite is true: I have the utmost confidence in her abilities, her attitude and her inner direction. In what others perceive as rebellious behavior, I see resourcefulness. Pereira is full of surprises, but I think we can trust her to do the right thing.
