BACKGROUND

Miles Campbell received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Cal State LA and went straight into the LAPD. He was assigned to LAPD-SWAT, where he excelled in tactical support and high-risk operations. When he needs to gain access to a scene, his approach is extremely dynamic and well thought out. This quickly qualified him for the position of captain. He received his first commendation for his excellent access control skills.

Campbell cares about the safety of his team. He works tirelessly to perfect defense and reinforcement techniques and equipment. After his first commendation, numerous others followed. He is now a certified firearms specialist. At the FBI, he trained with the special unit of the German Federal Police (GSG 9) and was subsequently recruited by the FBI SWAT team. Campbell has also attended interdepartmental training courses for international law enforcement agencies, including SAS and GIGN.

PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT

Within minutes of my meeting with Specialist Campbell, I felt like I was sitting across from an old friend. This is certainly due to his lovable, easy-going nature. We joked about American football and soccer – note: look up where the word “soccer” came from. I bet 20 pounds.

Several mission reports mention that other Rainbow operators call him “Papa Bear” or “the Diplomat”. He also told me how he had mediated a heated argument between two other team members just the night before. He’s clearly the one who holds the team together. As he is also very open and tolerant, he can work with any other Rainbow member. Not surprisingly, Specialist Eliza “Ash” Cohen is most comfortable in his presence.

His great sense of fairness is noticeable on a personal and professional level. I asked him if he had ever found it difficult to remain true to this principle. After all, he’s seen a lot. He answered me without hesitation: His job would be to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Apart from his great sense of justice, which constantly spurs him on, he also has a desire to change things for the better.

During our conversation, we spoke about the appreciation of his teammates, world cultures, and his love for the abused dogs he rescued. Campbell is an inquisitive individual, someone who likes to learn “for the sake of learning”: the fact that he, too, stays up late to watch documentaries makes us soul mates. He attributes his positive energy to his parents, who have been married for 42 years and are still in love like the first day. In addition to their work ethic, he tries to orientate himself on them in terms of cheerfulness and lightness.

Campbell is an optimist. He believes in the potential of people – all people – and wants to drive positive change. He is so preoccupied with the well-being of other people that he sometimes forgets his own needs. I suspect this is the cause of his recent outburst after a training session. His frustration with himself was more than obvious. One of his strategies hadn’t had the desired effect. It is imperative that we ensure that he receives as much encouragement as he gives to others.
