BACKGROUND

“If you only see the bad things in life, you miss the many opportunities to do good.”

Vicente Souza grew up as the youngest of three children in Nova Iguaçu, a city near Rio de Janeiro. After drug dealers murdered his older brother, Souza joined the Polícia Militar. There he was instructed in the use of numerous tactical weapons and learned various breakthrough strategies. During a raid on a crime cartel, Souza was ambushed and taken hostage. Though he lost an eye and endured other brutal attacks, his determination allowed him to survive for two months and was eventually freed. Since Souza, from the point of view of the Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais (BOPE), perfectly embodied their motto “victory over death” and also had a lot of experience in urban warfare, he was recruited after his recovery.

Dedication, concentration, analytical thinking – all these qualities make Specialist Vicente “Capitão” Souza an excellent operator, but at heart he is a family man. With every step of every decision he makes, his determination to protect his family and make their world a safer place grows.

He gives his own three children the same close bond in whose security he grew up. Unsurprisingly, he never got over the trauma suffered from the loss of his older brother. His firstborn son bears his brother’s name and his memory is kept alive with anecdotes and stories. Souza enjoys the moments when the family is together in his house the most. The quiet and safe sanctuary he has created there allows him to relax, knowing that his loved ones are close and safe. He has admitted that he does not trust his children’s friends, but on the other hand fears that he is being too assertive. It sounds like he raised her to be smart about life. However, I suppose that he will always be more afraid of losing her than parents with less tragic pasts.

Since there was talk of not using him in the field again after his capture and mutilation, I thought it best to talk to him about his feelings about that ordeal, even if it was a long time ago. I didn’t want to broach this topic during our first conversation, so I saved it for later meetings. It is clear that what he experienced shaped him. Souza is dedicated to justice and the protection of those who cannot protect themselves. It made him unyielding. Incessantly, he deciphers all aspects of the workings of these gangs in search of weak points. It is a mammoth task that a single police officer cannot handle.

His unparalleled determination and years of unique experience make him a valuable asset to any team, but it’s vital that he maintain some distance between his role as a protector and his self-esteem. We have to be understanding, but at the same time make sure he doesn’t lose his grip on the ground.
